Thread: Are the Beatles the Most Overrated Band of All-Time?

All right, I know I'm asking for it here, but I simply HAD to get it off my chest: I think the Beatles are the single most overrated band EVER.

I recently wrote an article about why I think the "Fab Four" are without question that most puffed-up act in the history of popular music, and I would LOVE to hear some Beatles enthusiasts defend the group against my criticisms.

http://internetisinamerica.blogspot.com/2011/11/five-reasons-why-beatles-suck.html

To abridge: they were basically media creations designed by Brian Epstein to score a deal with Capitol Records (so we just as easily could have had The Dave Clark Five-Mania, had he missed a flight or something), they were not only ADMITTED plagiarists but found legally culpable of it THREE times, their albums were absurdly overproduced, none of them were really all that talented as musicians, and dear lord, were they EVER hypocritical when it came to their personal lives. . .as the man that sang "imagine no possessions" died with about $150 million in his bank account (after abandoning his first wife and son, no less!)

Incendiary stuff, I know, but it's about damn time somebody brought this stuff up. I don't expect this to change anyone's opinion on the group or their music, but I just figured it was something that would be interesting to take a glance at.

So what is your take? Do the Beatles deserve all of their praise and reverence, or do you think it's undeserved, too?

So the Beatles were overrated because John Lennon was rich. Very rational.

I've stated my opinion on here before on this matter. People may not like it, but i agree. I think they are over rated.

I took your clickbait and read your interactive blog and here is my response.

That the Beatles are influential and historically important is a fact. It's not really up for debate. By the simple rationale of how many records they have sold and how many musicians listened to them. Unoriginal as they may be, it was a confluence of so many factors (including marketing, yes) packaged together for the first time that led to them being a juggernaut in the market. If you personally don't like the music that doesn't change the fact, they've had a lot of influence on a lot of people.
Finally, good on ya for not bowing to pressure from...your friends? Acquaintances? Coworkers? Whoever they are, stop hanging out with assholes who judge you solely according to musical taste; hang out with people who share your tastes; or just smile and nod when the subject comes up.

We couldn't have had Dave Clark Five-mania, as you suggest. They're good, but nowhere near Beatles level good. I respect your opinion, no matter how skewed it is. Just because you don't like the Beatles doesn't mean that they're bad or overrated. I just means that you don't like them. And believe me, you are in the very tiny minority on this. If not for the Beatles, we wouldn't have most of the great music we've had in the last 50 years. One of your reasons that you don't like the Beatles and strangely think that they're overrated is that they were basically media creations. I don't know if you've ever payed attention to the world, but most band and musicians are "media creations."

Sometimes, we're lucky and we get a band or singer that actually has talent....like the Beatles. Other times, we get Lady Gaga. Sure, she can play the piano, but so what? We don't like her because of the strange costumes that are very unnecessary. A group or single singer that has flashy costumes usually do so to cover up that they can't play well. Gaga has the skill, so I don't see the need for the outrageous costumes. The Beatles had the skills to be successful. They didn't have weird outfits or flashy fireworks. They didn't need them.

That article you posted also said that, basically, and correct me if I'm wrong, the Beatles and John Lennon were overrated because John Lennon was a jerk. Um...what does the way a person acts off stage have to do with how talented and influential the person is on stage?

So...no. The Beatles are not overrated. You just don't like them.

Also just b/c you say the Beatles are overrated doesn't mean you don't enjoy their music. I enjoy some of their songs, but to call them the greatest is ridiculous if you ask me. The Beatles are to music what Ali is to boxing...

What, the greatest of all time? Although I think Mike Tyson in his prime could have beaten Ali so maybe he's the G.O.A.T?

Ali is the most overrated boxer of all time. Not saying he wasn't great, but overrated. Louis is up there... Frazier imo is the greatest. He could brawl and box and he wouldn't lay on the ropes and let the other person wear themselves out. Thats how Ali won his tough fights. Maricano was a great fighter as well. Underappreciated if you ask me. Now as far as Tyson vs Ali. IMO Tyson couldn't beat Ali. Tyson couldn't hit any harder than Foreman and Foreman couldn't beat Ali. I will say this about Ali. He had some of the quickest hands ever for a heavyweight and could take a beating like nobody's business. If you took away his unreal ability to take punches, he would have lost a lot of fights. I mean look at Joe Frazier. The man could obviously take a beating, but couldn't handle the power of Foreman like Ali. Granted Ali took the shots to the body and forearms while Frazier to a lot of head shots, but Ali's ability to take a beating has always impressed me more than his actually boxing.

This forum isn't really the optimal platform to have this argument, but I have to put my 2 cents in.

You're wrong.

The Beatles collectively changed popular music as an entity like nobody else from that era could. They were unstoppable from every aspect. Their songs were written, arranged and performed so flawlessly that 90% of the time you hear a "Beatle cover" it's awful.

I'm not saying this as a fanboy, it's historically true. I'm not a fan of The Doors or Jonny Cash or Eminem, but I can observe their influence and stature in their respective genres.

The Beatles, like everything else, polarizes the masses because of how insanely popular they are. It's become a point of controversy anytime someone says 'I hate the Beatles' because so many other people adore them.

Wow. I have never seen a guy with such a skewed, wrong view of things. You can say you don't like The Beatles, but they most certainly don't suck. I read your article and suffered through your video. You are so wrong on so many points it's just not funny.

Agreed. If you don't like The Beatles, keep that to yourself.

People will be saying the same about Lady Gaga in a few years... Doesn't mean that she's one of the greatest.
