Does anyone remember this particular Diet Coke ad from 1988?

Both the old and new logos of Diet Coke are seen in this promo.

Coca Cola was always sweetened with sugar for most of it's history and as a result the brand was very protective of it's unique taste.

With the development of artificial sweetners, like sodium cyclamate and Saccharin, Coke could offer a "diet" version of it's soft drink. But since there was a problem with the strange aftertaste of most artificial sweetners, Coca Cola offered it's diet version under the "Tab" name so as not to damage Coke's reputation.

Along comes NutraSweet, and the 80's sugar-free revolution took off. No more funny aftertaste. So, for the first time in the company's history, a sugar-free soft drink tastes good enough to carry the "Coke" trademark name.

At least that's how I remember all the fuss around "Diet Coke".

Btw, I do remember that ad but by 1987 through 1989 Coke was blitzing television with ad after ad, so many that few stayed on air more than a few months each. Diet Coke advertising paid for a lot of air time back in the day.
