What's wrong with Hank Hill ? He's one of the best tv dads. And Ray Barone ? What's the matter with him ? In all the shows that you mention, it's the mother that's horrible. Things would've been just fine if Peggy Bundy hadn't been around. Al would've had SO much money that he could spend on things that Peggy either would let him have or took from him...like food, for example.

    Lois Griffin is just insane.

Debra Barone worries about what people think and keeps trying to change things that are perfectly fine in the first place.

Peggy Hill thinks she's a million times better than everyone else. Sort of like a cartoon version of Claire Huxtable.

Frank Barone has absolutely nothing wrong with him. It's the wife that's a problem. If you had to live with that "woman" for 40 years, you'd be just like him, too.

If I had Bill Cosby as a father I'd shoot myself.

"Frank Barone has absolutely nothing wrong with him"? The man is an idiot. I remember one episode in particular that made me really angry in which he thought one of the little boys was gay. If my father EVER said that about one of my children I would forbid him to step foot inside my house ever again. That is the restrained version. The unrestrained version would involve a piece of rebar and the Anvil Chorus blasting on the stereo. But it's only a tv show, I know this. He is in that catagory of horrible fathers.

You can't help but notice the Conners are poor, and looking at the two giant walking blobs of gravy who are the parents, one can't help but think their gargantuan appetites have something to do with that. Great parents.

Several of you have mentioned Hank Hill as one of the worst dads. There's nothing wrong with him. It's his wife and son that are freaks.

What I don't get is he hoards the hell out of money, yet he doesn't spend a cent of it, like ever. When he dies someone is going to get a lot.

Wow never thought I'd say this...But I actually AGREE with you on this one VHSer.

Anyhoo, as far as best and worst TV father, my answer for both of them is Homer Simpson. He's a bad father cause he just doesn't know the hell it takes to be a father, but at the same he's a GREAT father cause he tries really hard and truly loves he's kids. That's one of the things that made the first six, maybe seven, seasons of the Simpsons so great, not only were they funny, but they were also very touching because of this very reason with Homer.

Peter Griffin from Family Guy also has to be mention for worst.

    Best dads:

-Hank Hill, while i don't always agree with his politics or attitudes at the very least he seems a hell of a lot better than his own dad Cotton.
-Ward Cleaver, Once in a while he needs to be a little hard on the beaver
-Andy Griffith, In a way he always reminds me of my own dad despite the fact my dad is neither southern nor a sherrif.

    Worst dads:

-Any of the parents on Rugrats, them negligent bastards have the attention span of a goldfish and would get CYS called on them every week in the real world.
    -Peter Griffin
    -Homer Simpson
Those guys too would end up getting CYS and pretty up every other agency that deals with bad parenting in the universe after them.

note: I'm not going by whether or not I like the shows they're in but rather if I would actually want any of these characters as parents.

The believe that if someone is "fat" that must be spending a lot of money on food is bogus, especially in America, excatly nowadays, it's the total oppisite (again especially in the US). Ever since the whole nation said "hey's let's start eating health" the "health" food is went up HUGE in price much more than fast food and other junk food.

So believe it or not, it actually makes TOTAL sense that the Conners are fat and poor. Honestly, have you ever seen the inside of a "organic" food store that's suppose to be much better for you to eat? That crap is crazy money, meanwhile you can feed a family of five for less than 20 bucks by "fatty bad for you food" like Dimonos Pizza or McDonalds. Sad truth is...most middle class families CAN'T afford to "eat right." You can get three or four cheeseburgers at McDonalds for the price of a bag of carrots.

Plus the Conners aren't excatly "poor" (though they've made jokes about how they are) they "lower middle class" meaning that though they're far from rich, they make just enough to get by, which is what made them "relatable" to many American families.

For the record, I overstressed the poverty/food connection. I don't think that Dan Conner's eating habits sent them to the poor house. I do, however, believe that Dan's fitness sets a poor example for their family.

I disagree with your price comparisons though.

A bag of vegetables and a McDonalds hamburger is not a proper one-to-one comparison. A better comparison is a McDonalds hamburger and a sandwich made at home which is actually much cheaper and healthier. $20 at a grocery store buys a lot more than it does at McDonalds! I can buy a loaf of wheat bread, a head of lettuce, and a 2lb. bag of smoked turkey for around $20, and that is a lot healthier than McDonalds. No one says you have to buy a bunch of raw vegetables to keep from getting hugely fat, but you can still eat healthy on much less than it costs to eat fast food every day.

The best is clearly Danny Tanner. The worst is probably Shawn's dad from Boy Meets World.

heh yeah, a good example is the 'reptar on ice' episode when tommy and the other babies are on the ice while their parents are all asleep during the show. they don't get up until the final act and stu is the only one who goes after them
