When its before 1998. Anything before Hurricane Georges is retro.

That means Ocarina of Time is not retro unfortunatly.

Why are so many people wondering about a word that already has a definition?

It means to look back at something. People actually putting a time frame on the word retro really should crack open a dictionary. It's not that hard to figure out.

Have any of you ever heard a speech where the person talking says "So in retrospect" ? And he/she is only speaking about what they said at the beginning of the speech?

It's a term used to describe past tense thinking of any subject of any time frame.

This is how I've always catigorized it:

    1970 and below is vintage
    1970-1990 is retro
    1990-2000 is old school

Don't think so. How can something from twelve years ago can be retro... that was not long ago. Not even '96 is.

If '98 was retro then the 60's/70's or beyond is prehistoric for you I guess .

Involving, relating to, or reminiscent of things past; retrospective: As is often the case in retro fashion.

What's so hard to get about this?

^ Nothing. Is just that I don't care about the definition. I was starting an argument without the definition in mind just to make the thread running... thats all.

Fuck the freedictionary/wikipedia... is just for sharing ideas.

The meaning of retro is different for everybody, it depends on how old the person is, for a 30 year old , the 80's would be retro to them, for someone my age (21), the 90's would be retro, it would depend on when you were a kid and how old you are now.

If it's becoming popular for a second time and it's consciously of a different era....it's retro.

ZOMG, finally someone that gets it!

Unbelievable. Some of you idiots are so freaking ignorant on what is retro and what isn't, it's just ridiculous.

As mentioned before, retro is what you guys make it out to be. If you think the 90s are retro or not that's fine by me. It's retro to me, but to others like my parents, it's not because they felt that was not that long ago. Does it really matter on what we think is retro. Not at all. But for some you idiots on here, apparently it does.

So quit whining about what's retro and what's not. It's ignorant people like you that make me think that there should be rules to who should be allowed on Retrojunk.

This seems like a good definition.

From my experience, I have yet to see a significant revival of 00s culture. Therefore, the 00s are not retro. Some are likely to say that the 90s don't feel too long ago, which means that it would be difficult for anyone to make a solid case for any year after 1999 to be retro.

I would say 20 years at least before something can be considered retro. Something is likely to go out of style after about 10 years but it needs to be out of style (in my opinion) for a while until people are ready to bring it back.

I would say that something from 2009 or before is out-of-style and something from 1999 or back is retro.

To us, Retro would be anything 20 years or older. Anything 40 years or older is vintage. Then anything within the last 20 years would just be old school.

Is there an actual definition of it that people as a whole abide by?

"Retro" generally implies a vintage of at least a generation.

To give an illustration, if we assume that a mother was born in 1965 and her daughter was born in 1990. In this scenario, the year 1994 would be retro because you could compare the differences between the mother being age 29 in 1994 with the daughter being age 29 today in 2019.
