Thread: McDonalds Urban Legend?

I remember learning (via "word of mouth") that the character of "The Hamburglar" was eliminated because children found him to be too scary looking (and sounding). According to the Wikipedia: "the character was retired".

He was more creepy looking in the early days of the McDonaldland commercials (mid 1970's to early 1980's). Then they changed his appearance, and made him more "cute and cuddly". He also stopped saying: "Robble, Robble, Robble", and started to talk in a more gentle, child-like voice.

Does anybody know the real reasons why his character was revamped, and then dropped completely?

I have looked online for a website, or forum, that would answer my questions, but haven't had much luck.

    Thanks!

    Cheers!

I dunno, I only remember him looking like the guy in the black-and-white striped clothing along with the black top hat and the thick black glasses.

I always thought parents saw his character as promoting burglary. Trust me there was a reason for them dropping him.

I think they were just moving away from those characters anyway. No Mayor McCheese or Big Mac Policeman. They would rather promote kids shows and movies because it makes them more cash.

Well alot of the original characters like Big Mac & Mayor McChesse had to be gotten rid of because it was just too similar to what Sid & Marty Kroft ( Land Of The Lost) were doing at the time.

So to prevent a lawsuit, McDonalds got rid of all of the cast except Birdie, Grimace, Hamburglar, and of course Ronald.

Getting back to your question, yeah he was, mostly because he was so realistic looking like Captain Crook & Mayor McCheese, but not his later incarnation.

Which really begs the question, what the hell happened to the rest of the McDonald Land crew?

All the commentary makes sense. Maybe parents felt the Hamburglar was a poor role model, and complained to the McDonald's corporation? Lately it seems like Ronald has become the "star" of the commercials, and all the other characters are no longer necessary, thus no longer used. The McDonald's company seems to be focusing on other campaigns.

    Thanks for all the replies.

    Sincerely, Steve B.

A poor role model? Whoever thought the Hamburglar was supposed to be a role model in the first place is pretty fucking stupid.

Good morals and McDonald's will never add up anyway.

But I guess I could believe about of religious nuts protesting Hamburgular. They did it with Barney and Donald Duck for not wearing undies.

Did they ever protest Wimpy from Popeye he was always mooching to buy hamburgers?

I've thought about this before. I think it was all just a bunch of lame corporate bullshit ass covering where Mcdonalds eliminated any sketchy (no pun intended) character that might detract from the Mc'image they want to promote in order to be remain the global power they have become. Welcome to dullsville.

Actually, Mcdonalds dropped all their characters except for Ronald (cause he is too iconic to drop). They don't market hamburgers and fries to kids anymore, and the whole point of the Mcdonalds characters were to get kids to bug their parents to take them to Mcdonalds and buy them a happy meal. You only see Ronald in commercials now (no Grimace, Hamburglar, Fry Kids, etc), and you only see him promoting exercise and a special "healthy" kids menu that includes apple dippers, carrot sticks, fruit juice, etc.

Healthy Ha! Even the Mcdonald's apples come in a sealed plastic pouch probably saturated in preservatives.

There might be an underlying reason but i think they just moved on. The characters fit the genre at the time (I grew up in the 70's). But nothing last forever. They simply moved on and changed with the generations.

McDonalds went through some character questioning a few years ago.

Since the Hamburglar stole he wasnt setting a good example.

Kind of like how the Cookie Monster nowadays. According to Wikipedia: "Showing awareness of healthy eating habits for children, since 2006 he has said that cookies are "a sometimes food" and that he also likes fruits and eggplant."

Why would kids take bad advice from cartoon characters. This is exactly why all shows today are so "politically correct"

I think this is ridiculous! This PC crap is just getting out of hand. The "powers to be" worry about some character like Hamburglar being assoc. with a neg image because he steals cheeseburgers or the cookie monster for eating junk food. How about them focusing on making healthier options to fast food taste better or better yet, make the healthier stuff cheaper and more affordable! I mean just think of how cheap it is to go to McDonalds and get an entire meal of BigMac, fries, and huge ass coke for like $6.00, but then trying to find a place that makes a turkey burger, a salad, and maybe a Vitamin water for the same price? What do you think a kid will go with...something that tastes good and is also high cal or something that tastes awful, yet is healthy but costs double??
