Jackie Earle Haley is the new Freddy Krueger.

The actor will star as the iconic screen villain in New Line's redo of "A Nightmare on Elm Street," taking over the role that was played by Robert Englund.

The original "Nightmare," released in 1984, helped establish New Line and spawned a slew of movies. Krueger is a serial child killer murdered by angry parents who returns to terrorize teens in their dreams.

Krueger's burned face, his razor glove and his red-and-green sweater became instantly recognizable images as well as popular Halloween costumes.

Samuel Bayer is directing the relaunch, which was written by Wesley Strick. The pic starts lensing May 5 in Chicago.

Platinum Dunes’ Andrew Form and Brad Fuller are producing. John Rickard is co-producing. Richard Brener, Walter Hamada and Dave Neustadter are overseeing for New Line.

The role would cap a whirlwind couple of years for Haley, who made a splash in the 1970s as a child star in movies like "The Bad News Bears" then faded in the early 1990s. He left the business, and wound up working odd jobs in Texas.

Haley burst back on the scene in 2006 playing a pedophile in Todd Field's "Little Children," and also appeared in “Semi-Pro” with Will Ferrell, both for New Line, and indie drama "Winged Creature." He was praised for his portrayal of Rorschach in the recent "Watchmen" and next appears in Martin Scorsese’s "Shutter Island."

I was never a huge fan of NoES,but Goddamn,do we really need a new reboot for every 80s slasher flick?

Well I really don't want yet another reboot on a horror fanchise but if they already did the other big two, those being Halloween and Friday The 13th then you knew a Nightmare reboot was coming. I'm also not wild on the idea of Robert Englund not playing Freddy anymore but if he has to be replaced I guess they got someone who seems like they could be a good cast for it.

nice choice... noone will ever be better then Englund but this is a good choice. I think it would be awesome if Englund had a role or a cameo in the new relaunch though

All they have to do is say you don't have to put on the make-up and he'll be all over it.

Well I'm not keen on the ideas of remakes anyway but I'm not surprised. Considering Michael Bay and his crew behind this re-imaging also destroyed Transformers, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Friday the 13th franchises for me.

I think this is a fine choice.

By now I no longer ask, "why a redo"?
What I'm wondering is "why can't someone stop them"?
How do we reach the people who keep saying yes to this stuff?

I thought Billy Bob Thorton was going to play Freddy? Honestly I thought he had potential...but this guy? I don't think so.

Meh ether way to me Robert Englund will always be Freddy to me. And I do hope they throw him a bone and make him a consultant or something on the new movie, after all the guy probably has almost no career left.

Hollywood sucks...plain and simple. There is not need for a remake or reboot of these movies. Robert Englund was the perfect Freddy Kruger and the Nightmare on Elm Street movies are just fine the way they are...so why do them all over again when it doesn't need to be done? Why does Hollywood keep trying to fix what's not broken? What are they going to re-make next? Jaws? E.T? Star Wars? Why do people keep supporting these remakes and reboots? Hollywood will keep churning out this crap as long as the money keeps pouring in. It's just like when they remade Psycho in 1998...it was just like the original, only it had new actors and was set in the present day rather than the 60's. What was the point? Hollywood has clearly run out of new ideas...and the only thing they can do now is remake older stuff.

Amen, everything's ether a remake or a rip off of a foreign film. Why can't Hollywood see beyond the money, create new age classics like the ones I grew up with. Movies like "Jurassic Park" and "The Lion King".

Meh I knew I said had hopes for Billy Bob, but way I saw it, it was the less of two evils, after all a Nightmare on Elm St. remake was inevitable with Leatherface, Jason and Mike Myers getting their reboot.

God I cringe when I think about who might be next, as this string of remakes unnessisary sequels are being made.

I think Jackie-boy is the best replacement for Englund that you can get. He kicked ass as Rorschach and he will do a great Freddy Kruger

Well Retro, i believed Batman needed to be rebooted badly cause the Burton movies were flawed while Nolan perfected him better. Afterall there is Rob Zombie and the "Hostel" movies that are fresh new horror franchises.

With Batman, they wanted to make a more serious Batman that wasn't campy like Batman Forever and Batman & Robin...but what can they possibly do with Freddy Kruger that hasn't already been done a million times already? Nothing.

Well not Burton, his movies were great, I liked the dark spin on the Adam West show and Nicholson as the Joker. What's his name who took over after him was the one who ruined the series.

Though I do admit Batman did need a revamp after Batman and Robin.

I actually got excited when they said it would be Jackie Earle Haley taking over. He's got the right stuff for the role. Now if they could avoid screwing things up in the script....

Which is next to impossible in today's Hollywood.

I've given up on being optimistic about Hollywood remaking 70's/80's/90's flicks, no matter how obscure or iconic. They all end up just blowing chunks (not compared to the original, but just in general).

Obviously this "horror" movie will no doubt be a #1 box office hit opening weekend to the preteen/HS freshman girl crowd when it's watered down to a PG-13 rating, and we'll get tons more shitty sequels in the future.

This is why I don't go out to movies anymore. Hollywood's just too damn cliche and predictable.
