Every time I play a new game I always make it a point to let the character on screen stand still for a few minutes to see if they do anything. Sometimes it pays off, other times you wish you had that 3 minutes back. Either way heres some I remember and feel free to add to the list.

Super Mario 64 - Mario falls alseep

Sonic games - Sonic taps his feet and looks impatient

    Ristar- A shit load

Duke Nukem 3D - Stand still and Duke will say "What are you waiting for, Christmas?"

Super Game Boy - Using the theater back round, after a while of inactivity, two boys in the front row turn around and start playing Game Boy.

Metroid Prime - Samus will push a few buttons on her arm cannon

Banjo-Kazooie - I might of dreamt this one, but I think if the Banjo stands still long enough he pulls out a Game Boy, I know he is playing one in the menu screen but something makes me think he also starts playing one when left alone, correct me if I am wrong.

Also a lot of FPS characters when standing still will twirl a gun

Pretty sure a majority of platformers and FPSs have a pre-set condition that occurs when you're idle.

Earthworm Jim does a ton of stuff like that. I always find it entertaining when people progam irrelevant stuff.

I just remembered the game Boogerman. Doesn't he start playing with his boogers or mess with his cape when standing alone?

Donkey Kong Country is a classic for this. Pretty sure Luke looks at you in Super Star Wars after a while. Also, there's that Super Famicom Lupin III game where he takes a smoking break.

Rocket Knight Adventures had Sparkster look at the camera, pull off his helmet, and say "Let's go!"

Pac-Man in Pac-Man World 2 had him dancing or messing with a pellet.

Crash Bandicoot does his dance or places with a yo-yo in Crash Bandicoot: WARPED!

Jill from Jill of the Jungle holds her hip, and looks up when the message "Look, an airplane!" appears at the bottom of the screen.

In the later "Commander Keen" games, Keen starts reading a generic red book if you leave him alone for too long.

Krusty's Super Fun House where Krusty does some kind of egyption dance. That's probably the most entertaining part of the game.

I'm suprised no one mentioned the Zelda games for N64, where Link will do various things (swing his sword, flip his shield, kick his boots, yawn, look behind him, etc)

After Mario falls asleep if you wait a little longer he mutters spaghetti

Banjo Kazzioe does not play the gameboy (unless you mean the menu screens)
I think Kazzioe pokes Banjo on the head.

Oh ok , I wasnt sure to begin with about Banjo-Kazooie. These idle animations seemed to be pretty popular with 16 bit games, were there any 8-bit games that did this?

The only one I can think of is in Super Mario Bros 2, each character does something different.
Mario - Looks at the camera and tells you to "Fuck Off"
Luigi - Starts to write a suicide note while listening to The Cure
Toad - Whips out his cock and jerks off to a picture of Link (More old school Nintendo cross overs)
Peach- Eats a mushroom and then throws it up to stay in shape

If you stand still in Conker's Pocket Tales, Banjo-Kazooie music starts playing.
I want to be a dentist.

chrono trigger: on the world map they start waving their arms in the air and doing different actions depending on the character

mario world: this isn't really a character action. But leaving the special world music playing for long enough unlocks the playing of the mario all stars original super mario bros theme.
