Thread: Why are you expected to roll over and play dead at age 30?

But it seems like once you hit 30, everyone expects you to just start being old. Cut your hair, quit wearing band shirts, quit hanging up band posters, give up trying to make it in a band, quit doing this, quit doing that.

And when you're a kid, you're too young to do anything. Maybe when you're 15, 16, things start coming together a little bit. You're going to parties, maybe starting your first band, having your first relationship, starting to get a small taste of the world. But you're still a kid. So a taste is all it really is.

Then you graduate school. You're 18. Now's your chance to do anything. You've got full freedom. And you've got like what? 12 years? 12 years to have fun, chase dreams, live whatever kind of life you want to live, dress how you want, look how you want, be how you want. Then at 30, you're supposed to just give it all up and be old. Chop off that hair. Quit wearing those clothes. Quit going to the club. Buy some khakis and a polo shirt or something and go act old for the rest of your life. Take those piercings out of your face. Take down those Maiden posters. You had your run, hope you had fun, but it's someone else's turn now.

I'm not talking about the chances of musicians making it after 30. This isn't about that at all. It's about how people expect you to act and be after 30. Average life expectancy is what now? 70? 80? And out of that, you only get 12 years to do whatever you want and be whoever you want without anyone thinking too much of it. Hope you had a great time, now go spend the remaining 40 or 50 years acting old like you're supposed to, 'cuz if you dare do otherwise, you're a loser.

    I think it's lame.

    Your thoughts?

Well, if you wanna keep doing the shit you were doing in your 20s or whatever, then just do it. If other folks think it's strange, fuck 'em. You can't stop people from thinking certain things of you, but then again why should you care?

It only seems like you're expected to play dead after 30. And that's only because most people compress their lives to fit their employment straightjackets.

Its dumb. I hate when people expect you to be and act a certain way when you get older. I cant believe in going to be 20 soon >_< wtf is that?! I don't even remember being 18. How did I become old so fast? (yeah yeah, its not old, but it feels old to me).

I believe it all depends on what you choose to do, who you choose to do it with and on where you live.
So it's all up to you.

That is completely insane. That idea is just something some people in society want to become definite. In some societies you are supposed to live it up even more when you reach 30, and it has changed all throughout history. It's all in perception, and whether you wish to believe it or not. I have friends in their 50s who still have as much fun as they can and dress in band shirts and such. You can still have a successful job and a life as well. Just as long as you have will power of course. That usually has absolutely nothing to do with how you act as a person at any age. I think those who have the courage to be themselves no matter what are the most "grown-up" of people. When it all boils down to it, life's main goal is to be happy. Isn't that what we're all really after no matter what our chosen path may be?

Yeah, it's a real dilemma. That's how society is, though. Either you conform to their idea of what a proper, responsible 30+ yr. old is, or you're going to be working low-paying jobs and be less attractive to women your age who are looking for someone that can provide a healthy, satisfying marriage and children.

Somehow, I've gotten away with being a non-conformist and have acquired an outstanding job with high pay and no taxes. I don't even have an Associate's Degree yet, and I'm pretty much yawning at the prospect of having to take the final two courses to get it. What's the point?

Nope. I already donated to a worthy cause tonight, though.

The two things that contributed to me slowing down at 30 were bills and acid reflux disease. When you are in your early 20s you can have goofball jobs and just have a couple of roommates but once you buy a house you have real bills and need a real job. I make good money but I work a very physical job and am usually too wiped out at the end of the day to go to bars or clubs. That is also where the acid reflux comes in. It makes it very painful to get hammered so what's even the point in going out?

You know what they say: age is just a state of mind.
