I some times think about this. A song so popular they make a movie. I can only think of three movies like that.

"You light up my life" song 1977, movie 1978
"Take this job and shove it" song 1979 movie 1980
"Girls just want to have fun" song 1984, movie 1985

There has to be more out there, buti can't think of any.

Across the Universe and Mamma Mia.

and for the record, both the song and movie You Light Up My Life came out the same year, 1977. it won the Original Song Oscar months later.

Your right. The song "you light up my life" was originally recorded for the sound track of the movie. I always thought it was a year later. Across the universe and Mamma Mia are compilations of the beatles and Abba it was'nt just one song. I suppose compilations should count though. Purple rain came out with the movie. The music was made for the movie by prince.

Hard days night was written as a sound track for the movie. yellow submarine is different, some of the songs were written for the sound track while previous songs were added, it fits. Ghost busters was written for the movie, it was'nt a hit before hand.

As far as Stayin alive it was already a hit on the first movie. Was it in the sequal? I suppose it probably was, but the beegees wrote it for the first movie.

I don't know that song. The only song close is "my best friends girlfriend" by The cars. I doubt a 30 year old song will be made into a movie unless it is in the soundtrack. Must be a different song.

Some of the Rankin-Bass specials are based on songs.
