One of the main stars of the show "The Golden Girls" has passed on.

More info can be found here: http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080722/ap_en_tv/obit_getty_4

I figured that we might have some fans of "The Golden Girls" on here, so does anybody have any thoughts?

EDIT: I had to use a different link. The first obit showed up as containing a smiley, so I figured I would go with another one.

Yeah, I just heard about this about an hour ago. May she rest in peace. I love The Golden Girls!

I just heard about this through another message board. Sad that she's no longer with us, but at least now she's no longer suffering. IIRC, she was getting sicker.

That said, I love the Golden Girls. The concept for such a show was amazing, when you think about it, and Estelle's character of Sophia was so witty and funny. She was definitely my favorite character, along with Betty White's portrayal of Rose.

holy shit...she was basically the only reason TO watch the Golden Girls. It was her wit and funny remarks about the other three women that made the show hilarious.

Where to begin. Let me say that I adored Estelle Getty. After years of trying to make a living in Hollywood, a part in a new show (Golden Girls) was open. She auditioned twice for the part of Sophia and both times she was turned down. The NBC brass felt she looked "too young".

On her final audition she had an "oldie" makeover in a last attempt to save her career.

Folks, I just can not imagine 80's television without Estelle Getty. Her generation never had it easy. And she gave so much joy even while making the years of struggle look effortless.

Everyone remembers her from the Golden Girls, but does anyone else remember her from the movie "Mannequin"?

So sad, I love the Golden Girls and Estelle. It is one of mine and my grandmothers favorite shows. We use to watch it all the time together. I dreaded this day for awhile.
RIP Sophia

Six years ago I finally saw Mannequin for the first time after hearing all the critical put-downs about how awful a movie it was.

What a kick-ass fun time I had watching Mannequin! Had no idea Estelle Getty was in the movie til I saw the opening credits.

As the Mall manager, she was quite charming.

So Estelle Getty and Andrew McCarthy are walking through a four-storey shopping mall, no one around but the two of them.

Andrew's character says "I'm looking forward to my first day here - can't wait for the mall to open".

Estelle Getty, looking around the empty Galleria says, "we ARE open!"

I loved Estelle. She was so great and had so much spirit. I was actually thinking about her this morning when I watched The Golden Girls. That was such a great show and she was the best character. May she rest in peace.
Recipe for nostalgia: Mix 80's and 90's culture. Stir in some good memories. Add a dash of reflection. Mixture should now taste bittersweet. Shake well and enjoy!

She was great on Golden Girls. Stop or my mom will shoot was a great movie. I couldnt belive how much different she looked without the wig and make up from Golden Girls.

I can still see Estelle Getty surprising Sylvester Stallone with a "clean" service revolver by carefully washing it in the sink with the dishes, lmao!

I'll admit it. I still enjoy watching Golden Girls. They had great writers, They also had funny actors, and Estelle was one of the best on the show. It's a shame she died, but I'm glad she's not suffering any more.

Another great legend has passed away. I actually did like Estelle Getty when she was in "The Golden Girls".

To be honest, I always thought "Stop!, or My Mom Will Shoot" was a huge joke. But when I saw it for the first time, I really enjoy it, mostly because of her performance in the film. It was basically a guilty-pleasure movie.
