I'm also under the opinion that one song cannot describe an entire decade. A few can, though.
1980's- "Billie Jean," by Michael Jackson (1982, just one of many examples of Michael Jackson's dominance of the charts in the 1980's) "Round and Round," by RATT (1984, an example of metal) "Take On Me," by a-Ha (1985, an example of a song whose popularity exploded because of a music video, and thus, MTV) "Push It," by Salt-n-Pepa (1987, my personal pick for the most '80s song out there)
1990's- "U Can't Touch This," by M.C. Hammer (1990, for beginning the mainstreaming of rap) "No Rain," by Blind Melon (1993, an example of the grunge era) "The Sign," by Ace of Base (1994, an example of European techno music that was quite popular at one point) "Baby One More Time," by Britney Spears (1998, an example of the bubblegum pop music that permeated the industry by the end of the decade.)
