In 1997 Titanic broke the record for highest grossing movie ever last set by E.T. Now my question is which movie was better E.T. or Titanic? My opinion is that E.T. is and will forever will be a much more better movie than Titanic.

Yes it did I put this up because I finally had the chance to watch Titanic for the first time since I am injured and I saw no reason for it's success. It's just a love story with the sinking of the Titanic as a backround. Should've been called "A Movie For Sappy People!"

E.T. is and always will be 100 times (if not more) better than Titanic, and not just from a retro standpoint. E.T. was an original science fiction film that helped launch Steven Spielberg's career as director. It was a tale of friendship, trust, and growth with a tidy comedic backdrop thrown in for good measure.

Titanic was only one in a series of love stories set against the great tragedy of 1912. Movie magic helped recreate the horror of the infamous sinking, and the lesser shown (but more important) actors helped cement the story behind why the great ship plummeted. But, thanks to an overwhelming romance between characters Jack and Rose, the movie loses credibility from an historic perspective and instead shoves a love story through our retinas, making most viewers lose sight of what the film should really have been about.

E.T. was famous for its originality and creativity, but Titanic's success was solely a "right place at the right time" scenario. E.T. is hands down the better of the two best-selling blockbusters.

I dunno, I don't particularly care for ET, but I'm the exception. Titanic isn't exactly one of my favorite movies either, but you can't deny that it was a very groundbreaking film. I mean, they built a whole set and then sank it. The effects still look nice today, too.

Anyway, I don't think either movie deserves so much hype.

Well its hard to say, i mean from a historical point of view Titanic is the better movie. But then again E.T. i felt was more of an emotional film which i beleive appealed to more audiences than Titanic did.

    E.T. for sure.

Though technically Titanic knocked off Star Wars (thanks to the Special Edition rerelease), not E.T.

I won free tickets to see Titanic. The Winslet nude scene was great but other than that it bored me to tears.

I can't add much on ET but I will say I think it's the best live action children's/ family movie of the 80's and a decent introduction for young people to sci-fi.

Theres a 15 year difference of box office interest between the two films. E.T. came out in 1982 when tickets were cheaper, but more people went to the theater to see it. Titanic was released in 1997, tickets were more expensive. Thats the the thing they never factor in; people and repeat viewings.

And Kate Winslet has a much better nude scene in Heavenly Creatures.

Even though I can't say I'm a huge fan of 'E.T.' ( he was always creepy to me), I do like it better than 'Titanic'. All 'Titanic had going for it was the effects and Jason Barry. Hubba-hubba.
