In the beginning, the show was fine, in my opinion. It was really good, but as the kids got older, the more annoying it got. IMO, the show should've ended in about 2000, maybe 2001 at the latest. Seems the earlier seasons were more realistic compared to the later ones.
I know Jessica Biel didn't want to do the show anymore, but they could've handled her character way better that what they did. Mary met a guy, got married, and had a child, and yet, no Mary. We see the husband and said child, but never Mary. They could've gotten someone to replace her or something..
The only reason my grandmother, my mother, and I continued to watch it (my mother felt the same way as I did) was because my grandmother liked watching it with the both of us. NBC used to air the show here (we don't get the WB) so she'd tape it, and then we'd watch it on Sunday nights. I always groaned when she called me up to watch, but I put it aside (just as my mother did) to watch it with her.
Oh, for the record, I liked the twins. I thought they were so adorable. In a way, I'm glad the show ended before they could grow up and have their characters ruined like say...Ruthie.
I loved her in the earlier seasons. I liked how she and Simon were like inseparable, along with the dog tagging along behind them. Ruthie seemed to have the most sense out of all of the kids, but that got lost when she became a teenager where she became incredibly selfish (I know, typical teen), but I had hopes of her not falling into the stereotype. I think they should've had her character become a lesbian. It would've made the show more interesting.
The only thing that I did like of the later seasons was the fact that they did get a little realistic regarding Simon's promiscuous character. At least they didn't all act like goody two-shoes. The fact that Simon was having an STD scare was interesting and I'm sure he quit with the unprotected sex afterwards. Was he just an addict or something, or did he just like having sex a lot? Thinking about it, I think he had a pregnancy scare too with his gf..
The main aspects that annoyed me for the entirety of the show, is the fact that for some reason, it's necessary for you to have a boyfriend for some oddball reason, and the other aspect that I found incredibly bothersome, was the fact that the family was too damn nosy!! Maybe the latter wasn't that bad in the beginning, but it was grating in the later episodes. I think there was one episode where they were literally celebrating Ruthie getting her first period.
