Thread: Is Rock 'N' Roll Popular At All Among Today's Kids And Teenagers???

Whenever I have my friends' kids (ranging in age between 10 and 15 years old) in my car, they often ask me to change the radio from the rock station I listen to, to a rap/hip hop station. They just don't seem to like good ol' rock 'n' roll! When I was their age, rock music was the "thing", it was cool. Bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, Van Halen, The Doors, Black Sabbath, KISS, Deep Purple, and even The Beatles were big among kids and teenagers when I was in school. It wasn't uncommon to go to school and see classmates wearing t-shirts of their favorite rock bands. Although it seems the majority of today's kids are into rap and hip hop, does rock 'n' roll still have a large kid/teenage audience???

Yeah, it makes me ashamed to be apart of my generation. I am 15 and I love metal, grunge, and hard rock.

If by Rock N' Roll you mean Rap, Hip-Hop, and Screamo-Emo, then yes.

I think it still is with some younger kids. I have friends that are 14-15 who hate rap and love rock.

I think rock 'n' roll today is just different like it always becomes. Rock 'n' roll used to be Elvis Presley and a lot of kids would probably disagree about him being rock 'n' roll nowadays.
It feels like genres are competing now; particularly hiphop/rap/crunk whatever the flip and indie emo rock punk or whatever. Plus I'm noticing a lot of synths being added to music here and there -- to me I actually see that as a good sign. And lyrics are starting to get decent. Slightly. Depending on who you listen to.

Yeah, this whole hip hop takeover pisses me off. i'm 16 and the only bands I really hear anyone say they like is crap like Fall out Boy and avenged sevenfold... whoever that is.
I only know of a few people my age who appreciate the old stuff like Nirvana,Aerosmith and van halen.
    whatever there loss

A lot of children DO like rock and roll, they just don't ONLY like rock and roll. Kids now like a bigger variety of music.

There's a bigger variety of music out there to be liked. I've known some places where the kids were really into Skynyrd and southern rock. Of course, in the city, they're more into urban stuff. But then my 15 year old cousin is into stuff like Slipknot. They're all into different stuff.

I dunno. I'm only 13, but i hate 98% of the rap/hip-hop junk spreading. the other 2% is just stuff i've heard so much, that i actually start to like a bit.

I think, like someone else said, the lyrics in songshave definately progressed.

I like stuff from the early 2000's, like Michelle Branch, Vanessa Carlton, and some of Avril Lavigne's old stuff. And when i was younger, a lot of Britney Spears, Play, and Backstreet Boys.

I'm not really into a lot of retro bands. No Doubt and some of Smash Mouth's earlier stuff iis pretty good though.

....i dunno. i think there has been a certain decline in rock n' roll.
Me and my friend took a survey of what genre of music is your favorite? for our computer class to make a spreadsheet for it, and graphs, and there were only like, 3 kids who put down rock. All the rest of them put rap/hip hop, and a few put pop, country, or alternative. so the majority is definately rap.

Greatmemories90, we did those same graphs at my school and everyone liked rap, rock, pop and country equally.

Of course, my younger cousin did a graph like that recently and nearly every kid voted rap/hip hop.

Rock will rise again amongst the young'ns. With all of these trends that are being recycled from past decades, it's only a matter of time before you'll see hair metal and glam everywhere.

No wonder... MTV was still showing rock videos back then.
