Thread: Kids And Smoking

I've been very anti-smoking all my life, especially after my mom died from lung cancer when I was 19 (she was 56) even though she had quit smoking about 4 1/2 years before. One thing that has always been very disturbing to me is when I hear of kids smoking, with some as young as the tender age of 10 smoking their first cigarette. I'm friends with several families with kids, and I often tell the kids to never start smoking, hoping and praying that they will heed my advice. I just hope that underage smoking laws and anti-smoking campagnes discourage more and more young kids from lighting up. Would you say there are fewer young smokers (middle school/high school aged) today than say 20 or 30 years ago, or is it about the same???

I see kids smoking all the time, usually after I buy cigarettes for them.

Smoke 'em if ya got 'em, kiddies!

Anti-smoking campaigns have a nasty tendency to actually make kids want to smoke more.

If you don't want to smoke, that's fine. Let everyone else make their own decision.

I hate smoking, it's probably one of the most disgusting things that a person can do. Cigarettes smell bad, and they discolor a lot of things like game consoles. My grandma got a few heart attacks from smoking, and she almost died.

the thing about smoking is, that it's YOUR CHOICE. No one can make you smoke. They offer you a cigarette, you'll either turn it down or take it. Like those JEL commercials; they are on the right track, but they fail to mention that people are the ones who choose to smoke. We aren't mindless robots programed to smoke because the tobacco companies want us to. We have the choice to turn it down.

The kids do it to make their parents angry .get more attention, or they just want to be apart of the crowd.

I don't smoke myself, and I have an uncontrollable bias against smokers. That's unfortunate for my dad because he smokes too, and I'm a little concerned for his health. Every smoker that I know wishes for dear life that he or she never started it.

My mom smokes, it scares me a lot that she might get lung cancer but she wont quit. Shes been smoking since she was like, 16. Her hair, clothes, skin, and breath smell like cigarettes....its so disgusting.

I find it so sad when I see young kids smoke...they have no idea what it will be like in the future when they are addicted and smell like shit with yellow rotting teeth and black lungs.

Yea, my dad started smoking when he was 13 and now he doesn't look very healthy. He's had one heart attack and almost had another one. He had to have heart surgery. My mom doesn't smoke though, and I thank her for keeping me on the right track and helping me realize that stuff is just plain no good.

I can understand "Its your choice" but what about the Industries not caring who they kill just to make a few bucks.

I don't know. I could they they have the right to run a business, but on the other hand, their business is filling up drugs and tabacco with additive nicotine, which in turn, kills people.

    Hmm...

Stouffer's lasagna makes people fat, and obesity kills all kinds of people. Why blame them, or McDonalds, or whomever makes stuff?

Speaking of that, I bet you ANYTHING that obesity is killing more Americans per year than smoking is, but you don't see a lot of people coming out and protesting that!

People will continue to eat fast food even if it's unhealthy. It's just that they prefer cheaply made food over homemade stuff.

As for this topic, the youngest kid that I knew that smoked a cigarette was a kid in my 5th grade class named Dale. He told the class that smoking makes you bad ass and cool. He got those habits from his dad. No one liked him anyways. He committed suicide before 9th grade.

If you want to smoke, fine. I don't care just don't smoke in my face.

I think that this clip from Family Guy sums it all up: http://www.adultswim.com/video/?episodeID=334b1b4da3ca8580c00dd210910011a6

I'm not for supporting smoking or being a bigot who can't except that fact that people can make their own decisions. You can't make people smoke or not smoke. It may not be good for you, but everyone has their own right to choose whether to smoke or not. Same deal with fast food.

What pisses me off is people who smoke around you, making you breathe in all that second hand smoke. We shouldn't have to get cancer also because of your bad habit. Im so glad they banned smoking in restaurants and bars and what not.

Yea but you can work out to get back in shape or eat less.sure it might hard for some but thats why there are people that try to help.many places are starting to add healthier food. cancer is something that isn't as easy to get rid of. the only chance you have of surviving is if you know its there before hand so it can get cut out, and then you have to take chemotherapy.

but you are still right obesity does kill, but it seems like you have more of a choice with that.
