the original flex circuits in the atari 5200 controllers were faulty. You can buy rev 9 flex circuits and replace the originals or buy rebuilt ones off ebay, and they will work great. I have done both, there easy to rebuild. The 5200 did have some good games. I have a 4 port and a 2 port version and they work great. The 2 port is better it does not need that special rf switch the 4 port system required. The 4 port was the first version of the 5200, after there was a problem with the rf switch wich the power cable ran through, they decided to release a 2 port version with the traditional switch box rf switch and power port on the back of the system. After both of these problems, the Atari 5200 got a bad rap, Atari gave up on it and built the Atari 7800 wich was a improvement. But the Atari 5200 controllers were ahead of there time, analog joystick, pause button on the controllers wich was new at that time and a reset and start button on the controllers. Way later Nintendo used analog joysticks on there N64.

Just buy the 5200 joysticks with the "Rev. 9" wiring inside of them and you should have a fine, fun time with your 5200 ...

I worked at the Sears Toy Dept when these came out. They didn't sell well. ColecoVision had better games, but equally bad controllers.

Credit goes out to James, the Angry Video Game Nerd who reviewed the worse video game console ever made, the Atari 5200. This console sucks!!!
