Why A Goofy Movie works

When I was eight years old, me and my cousin used to have sleepovers at my grandma's place. She has a bunch of movies(mostly VHS)and one of those movie players that plays DVD and VHS. Some of the movies she has are Chicken Run, Home Alone, The Road to El Dorado, but one of the movies she has is A Goofy Movies. My cousin always wanted to watch Chicken Run and after it was over, I would run to the VHS collection to watch A Goofy Movie. Immediately from the opening dream sequence, I was always hooked in and for the next hour and eighteen minutes, I was entranced. Even now, a seventeen year old high school senior, I still remember all of the scenes: the powerline concert, Bigfoot dancing, Max hijacking the stage, being able to sing every song and of course, the cheese whiz. I would often skip the opening song from Dr. Looney's Remedy(which is at the beginning of the US VHS) just so I could get to the movie quicker. For a long period of my life, I believed that I was the only one that really cared about this movie and that everyone thought that it was just considered an okay Disney movie.

But one video proved me wrong.

I remember watching the Nostalgia Critic's review of this movie and towards the beginning, he shows pictures of the fandom which includes cosplay, fan art, and merchandise. I was shocked to learn that I wasn't the only one that felt a strong impact on Max and Goofy's crazy trip and Max's journey to win the girl. I've also met other people who have said that they grew up watching this movie on the Disney Channel or who also had the VHS tape. It makes me happy that this movie has become a cherished film of Disney's library.

That is the main focus of this article: Why does A Goofy Movie work.
Could it be that it was the first movie to feature Goofy, could it be the comedy, or could it be that it came out during the right time. The reason why I believe it works is because it's relatable.

When we're teenagers, we have felt the exact same feelings Max has felt: we're embarrassed by our parents and we only care about relationships. But it's during a certain experience that it makes us realize that even though our parents can embarrass us, they still love us and we love them. Max is in a situation where he finds his dad embarrassing and doesn't want anything to do with him. When he goes on the trip with his dad, Max realizes that he loves his dad and shouldn't be embarrassed by him because that's what parents do.

Another relatable scenario is Max wanting to get Roxanne. We've always hoped that the person we have a crush on will feel the same things as us, and it's always a bummer when they don't. In the movie, Max has a crush on Roxanne who he makes a promise to that he will be at a powerline concert because she is a fan of him. At the end, he reveals that it was a lie and she reveals that she forgives him and that she liked him too. My heart always leaps when they kiss at the end. We wish something like that can happen to us but it's great to see that happen to other people. Plus, Max totally deserved it.

That's why A Goofy Movie works in my opinion. To me, it's one of the best movie's to come out of the 1990's. I know the article is more thought provoking that the other articles on this sight, but I just wanted to express something that I love, like what other writers do on this site. I hope you enjoyed this article, this is my first one and I plan to write other articles expressing my love for certain things.
