Pixel Alumni: Volume II

The Videogame Graduates from the Class of 1993-2000
On
March 25, 2009
These are THE nostalgic video games that I recall when thinking back to a particular year growing up.

Some are missing from this list.......but this is mine, and purely off the top of my head.

These games defined each aforementioned year for me. Let's see the classmates and graduates..............it's all in fun!

Class of 1993

Valedictorian

The 7th Guest (PC)

The first game that I played on CD-Rom was this classic over a friends house. It was a cool horror/puzzle/mystery game that won several awards in the 90's. Even by todays standards "The 7th Guest" still garners much respect.....even from the toughest of critics.

Salutatorian: Super Mario All-Stars (SNES)

Class of 1994

Valedictorian

Mega Man X (SNES)

This first "Mega Man" foray on the SNES started off with a bang! A great story, new characters and weapons.......not to mention soundtrack.......make this everyones favorite! I like all of the armor upgrades and graphical detail on explosions.

Salutatorian: Killer Instinct (Arcade)
Class President: Super Metroid (SNES)
Treasurer: Sonic & Knuckles (Sega)
Secretary: Chrono Trigger (SNES)

Class Nerd: Warcraft (PC)
Class Bully: Castlevania: Bloodlines (Sega)
Class Clown: Earthworm Jim (Sega)
Class Jock: Cruis'n USA (Arcade)
Cutest Couple: X-Men: Children of the Atom (Arcade) / Darkstalkers (Arcade)

Class of 1995

Valedictorian

Mortal Kombat 3 Ultimate (Sega)

Love it or hate it......"Mortal Kombat" was a 90's staple with its very different fighting system and graphics. Even "Capcom" and "SNK" purists found there way over to the hulking "Midway" franchise. "Ultimate MK3" built on the already established and improved on the characters and moves. Violence, blood and gore, oh my.......

Salutatorian: Twisted Metal (Sony)
Class President: Mega Man X2 (SNES)
Treasurer: The Punisher (Arcade)
Secretary: Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES)

Class Nerd: Final Fantasy VI (SNES)
Class Clown: Vectorman (Sega)
Class Bully: Castlevania: Dracula X (SNES)
Class Jock: Sega Rally (Arcade)
Cutest Couple: Real Bout Fatal Fury (Arcade) / Marvel Super Heroes (Arcade)

Class of 1996

Valedictorian

Super Mario RPG (SNES)

This is a game that is beyond description. If you don't know, you better ask a friend. If you've played it, then I'm sure you are conjuring up memories as you read.........EPIC!

Salutatorian: Dead or Alive (Arcade)
Class President: House of the Dead (Arcade)
Treasurer: X-Men vs. Street Fighter (Arcade)
Secretary: Bubsy (Sony)

Class Bully: Quake (PC)
Class Nerd: Harvest Moon (SNES)
Class Jock: Virtua Fighter 2 (Sega)
Class Clown: Crash Bandicoot (Sony)
Cutest Couple: Metal Slug (Arcade) / Duke Nukem 3-D (PC)

Class of 1997

Valedictorian

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night (Sony)

Every once and a while a game goes back to basics and improves, while suprising, even the most jaded gamers. "SOTN" was that such game. With a free roaming level system, new characters and an overall franchise reboot.......this would become the measuring stick for future franchise installments. Besides the highly addictive music..... this title has multiple secrets and I still have ever only completed 97% of 100% of the game.

Salutatorian: Final Fantasy VII (Sony)
Class President: Goldeneye 007 (N64)
Treasurer: Mario Kart (N64)
Secretary: Time Crisis (Arcade)

Class Nerd: Diablo (PC)
Class Bully: Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter (Arcade)
Class Jock: NFL BLitz (Arcade)
Class Clown: Top Skater (Arcade)
Cutest Couple: Street Fighter III (Arcade) / King of Fighters '97 (Arcade)

Class of 1998

Valedictorian

Metal Gear Solid (Sony)

Solid Snake kicks ass in the first Playstation "Metal Gear". Excellent gameplay, story, music and a real sense of "hide and seek"........"MGS" delivers everytime! Break out the cigarettes and grenades and relive the glory............not in real life of course.

Salutatorian: Resident Evil 2 (Sony)
Class President: Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (N64)
Treasurer: Tekken 3 (Arcade)
Secretary: Half-Life (PC)

Class Bully: WCW/NWO Revenge (N64)
Class Nerd: StarCraft (PC)
Class Jock: Gran Turismo (Sony)
Class Clown: Grand Theft Auto (PC)
Cutest Couple: Street Fighter Alpha 3 (Arcade) / King of Fighters '98 (Arcade)

Class of 1999

Valedictorian

Tony Hawk's Pro Skater (Sony)

This was the game that made a franchise out of unrealistic skateboarding.......but who cares?! It was fun linking ridiculous combos on even more ridiculous obstacles. "THPS" made millions and is just now trying to shed their previous image and reinvent a more plausible skate game. Couch potato posers unite and rejoice!

Salutatorian: Marvel vs. Capcom (Sega)
Class President: Giga Wing (Arcade)
Treasurer: Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver (Sony)
Secretary: EverQuest (PC)

Class Nerd: Lunar: Silver Stary Story Complete (Sony)
Class Bully: Garou: Mark of the Wolves (Arcade)
Class Jock: Gran Turismo 2 (Sony)
Class Clown: Power Stone (Sega)
Cutest Couple: Final Fantasy VIII (Sony) / Chrono Cross (Sony)

Class of 2000

Valedictorian

Marvel vs. Capcom 2 (Sega)

Easily the most heralded fighting title of all time. Arcade junkies, competitive players, console kids, even the occasional gamer loved "Marvel vs. Capcom 2". Perhaps, a third installment will come out.....I have heard rumors go both ways involving a certain Japanese game reusing it's fighting engine......only time will tell. "Marvel Comics" are dickheads with licensing, even if "Capcom" makes the games awesome. They would rather deal to "Activision" for some lame crap.

Salutatorian: Crazy Taxi (Sega)
Class President: Capcom vs. SNK (Sega)
Treasurer: Gauntlet Dark Legacy (Arcade)
Secretary: The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)

Class Bully: Shenmue (Sega)
Class Clown: Pokemon Stadium (N64)
Class Jock: Madden NFL 2000 (Sony)
Class Nerd: The Sims (PC)
Cutest Couple: Samba de Amigo (Sega) / Dance Dance Revolution (Sony)
