I was 5 in 1990, so I remember the whole decade pretty well, and I think it was a great time to grow up, over all. I had a happy childhood, and think of my past as a sunny time - a golden time.
When I was a very young child, I woke up every morning to The New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. The theme song still plays in my head every morning. "Gotta get up, gotta get going, gonna meet a friend of mine". Sesame Street, Shining Time Station, Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood, and Reading Rainbow were also shows I watched every day. Public television continued to offer great programming throughout the decade, and still does - sometimes.
The first TV show I really loved was Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and Raphael was always my favorite. He was unique, had a go-it-alone attitude, and seemed to kick the most shell. I dressed up as him for Halloween one year (my little brother was Leonardo). I loved the live-action movie (and still do), had tons of the toys, and even had the soundtrack on cassette tape (Go Ninja, Go Ninja Go!!)
I really liked the show Animaniacs and The Tick as I got older. I remember being angry when Fox Kids canceled The Tick, and although Patrick Warburton is one of my favorite actors, the live-action show they attempted was a disgrace. Thankfully, my dad loved the original cartoon as well, and bought all of the episodes on VCD (before they finally put them on DVD).
I loved the comic strip Calvin and Hobbes and broke out those books every summer. That was the right time to read them. That shaped my outlook on life in a big way. They may have turned me into the reflective person I am.
The 90's were also a great decade musically, with so many talented alternative rock bands out there. We had a great station where I lived, and because of that, I've developed into a person with excellent taste in music (in my opinion, of course), and who is willing to listen to new kinds of music as well.
They taught us never to grow up. From Peter Pan (and Hook) to Toys 'R' Us. The 90's were a great decade for kids, and it has been hard to leave it behind. I have a feeling the present decade will not be remembered nearly as fondly by the generation who grew up in it. Hold on to your butts, stick together, do the right thing, and kick shell when necessary. The power is yours. |
