Fawlty Towers Season 2 Episode 1
Episode Title: Communication Problems
Episode Plot
It's a busy day at Fawlty Towers, but hard-of-hearing guest, Mrs. Richards is having none of it. She struggles to see why Polly can't serve her instead of somebody else and struggles to grasp Manuel's poor English (leading her to believe the manager is a Mr. C K Watt, aged 40). Meanwhile, Basil gets a hot tip on a horse bet which he has to keep as a secret from Sybil. Manuel is told to place the bet, then forget everything about it. Mrs. Richards complains about her room and the view (which is actually nice for Torquay), so Basil gives up after she says she hasn't turned her hearing aid on. Manuel appears and gives the horse winnings to Polly. After some confusion over toilet paper, Basil takes the money. However, Mrs. Richards announces the loss of her £85. With Sybil becoming suspicious of the betting money, Basil gives it to the Major for safekeeping. The following day, the Major accidentally hands Basil's £75 to Mrs. Richards, who is still £10 short. Basil breaks down, fainting at the mention of Mrs. Richards when a delivery man turns in a vase and £95 inside a glove. Basil realises he can be £10 up on his bet when suddenly, the Major says openly that Basil won the money on the horse. Sybil confiscates the money, Basil drops the vase, and Mrs. Richards is paid back for the damages out of Basil's winnings.
