Captain Planet and the Planeteers Season 2 Episode 20
Episode Title: Twist Of Fate
Episode Plot
The Planeteers take a well-earned vacation in Mexico, and Wheeler can hardly wait to shop for dirt cheep bargains. He only sees homeless and unemployed people, and he passes judgment on them without having walked in the shoes of a poor person. Gaia appears to the Planeteers and reprimands Wheeler, stating that he could be poor if not for a twist of fate.
Suddenly an earthquake hits, and the Planeteers are sent to help a farming village that has been hit very hard. While four of the Planeteers rescue a farmer who was buried in a cave-in, Wheeler searches for other people who have been trapped by the quake. An aftershock causes him to have a bad fall that renders him unconscious. He is later found by the same farmer who the others rescued from the cave-in, and the farmer, Paco, takes him to the local hospital while on his way to a new home and hopes for a more prosperous job.
When he regains consciousness, Wheeler cannot remember who he is, and Paco leaves him in the emergency room before setting out to find a job in the city. When Ma-ti tries to contact Wheeler through telepathy, Wheeler calls out to him, and the doctors, thinking Wheeler is delirious, want to place him in restraints. Wheeler runs off and meets up with Teresa, an orphan girl who treats his wound and offers to teach him to work for eating money.
When two thugs grab Teresa, Wheeler says You guys better back off, or youre gonna be playing with fire! When he says this, he activates his ring and sets a car on fire. Later, he tries unsuccessfully to trade his ring for some food. When Teresa swipes some fruit, they run back to the shanty where Teresa lives. It is there that Teresa confesses her dreams of becoming a doctor.
Suddenly, the fire that Wheeler accidentally set begins to spread into an uncontrollable inferno. Wheeler is able to escape the flames when he rescues a baby, but Teresa is trapped. When Wheeler tries to get the citizens to help, they accuse him of being an arsonist, and they chase him out of the neighborhood.
Another bang to the head partially restores Wheelers memory, and Paco finds him and takes him back to his home. When they arrive to the dirty slum, Pacos wife gives Wheeler a pair of shoes (He lost his in a skirmish with the residents of Teresas slum.) that had once belonged to a homeless man who just passed away. Suddenly, the rest of Wheelers memory returns, and he and Paco rush to rescue Teresa.
The fire proves to be too much for the Planeteers to handle alone, and Wheeler returns just in time to call Captain Planet. Cap immediately rushes into action and saves Teresa, who was seconds from being burned to death. He then works to extinguish the fire.
Paco decides to return to his farm when he finds that life is far from better in the city, and he offers to take Teresa in and help her prepare for studies that would eventually allow her to pursue her dream of being a doctor.
