I had a really weird (and almost scary) thought.....

Eureeka 7 years 10 months ago Posts: 93	OK, most of the time you'll see people (like myself) who grew up in the 80's/early 90's talk about what crap cartoons that are on today (like on Nickelodeon) and mention more than a few shows that are so much better, and that the poor little kids today are brainwashed. Well anyway, my weird thought: I was thinking about these brainwashed kids as late teens/adults, and by that time Nick became crappier even than when they were kids, and they say something like, "I hate the crap Nick has on today! What's with that new [u][insert crappy cartoon][/u] show? It's so stupid! I remember when they used to have good TV shows, like Spongebob, Zoey 101, All That, My Life as a Teenage Robot, etc, now those were GOOD shows! The early 2000's shows were the greatest! The stuff today is just dumb!" When I had that weird thought I felt amused and disgusted at the same time, because Nick would become so crappy that these people would think that the shows they grew up on were good to begin with! Well, you probably think this is mindless fluff, but I felt I had to share that. Post opinion if you want.

Derrick 7 years 10 months ago Posts: 1255	The thought of that makes me cringe... Thats why I closely monitor what my 9 year old sister watches on TV. I try to make sure she doesnt get sucked into the crap on Nickelodeon like Romeo or Zoey whatever and the crap on Disney like Lizzie Maguire or Raven. But its hard when those are basically all kids have to watch these days and I dont wanna act like some dictator but I just cant stand kids TV today. So I got her hooked on my Animaniacs tapes. But its not enough. The problem with kids today is that they dont respect the old stuff. I showed her Ducktales and the Smurfs and she hated it. I dont know what to do anymore.

Jason43 7 years 10 months ago Posts: 1799 Account Disabled	I've said this before and I'll say it again....alot of you guys look at these old shows with rose colored glasses. Yes, there were alot of great cartoons, but we were also spoon fed mounds of animated crap. For every Transformers or GI Joe, there were 10 shows like Madballs that were just completely horrible. Yes, most of todays shows are just mindless fluff, but thats no different than 10-20 years ago. Heck, you want mindless fluff, go watch a few episodes of Care Bears. Nostalgia can have a huge influence on your judgement.

pikachulover 7 years 10 months ago Posts: 6110	I know it's like how I feel about music. I think a lot of the new rock is bad. And the stuff I listen to (mostly from the 90s) my parents tell me it's bad. I remember telling my mom pretty soon you'll be hearing 90s rap on an oldies station.

MacPlus512 6 years 4 months ago Posts: 403	What could happen is that us, as future parents, would raise our kids on what we knew was proven to be good. As an example--I wasn't fed Nickelodeon at all. Heck, I didn't know what Nickelodeon even was until people in kindergarten started talking about it. Sure, I watched PBS shows and Wheel of Fortune and later in life got hooked on Power Rangers and Killer Tomatoes on Fox but the majority of my early childhood (by early childhood I'm referring to ages 2-6) was spent with Disney movies and videos. The same classic movies that had entertained my mom and my grandparents. They knew this stuff was good. And the funny thing is that they also came to like the newer stuff--especially my grandpa, who became a fan of Killer Tomatoes. And as for using stuff on the younger generation--it depends on if they've been brainwashed or not. In Pittsburgh, there was a man named Frank Cappelli who used to run a weekly sing-along show for children. He would also tape various points around town and come up with songs for each. Not sure if this was broadcast anywhere other than Pittsburgh, but some of the videos were in neighborhoods I am familiar with. The show was on in the early 1990s and I used to look forward to watching Frank every week. He made some videos of his show and I bought one in 1990. I used to play this video just as much as the Disney ones. My cousin, who is nine years younger than me, didn't seem interested in it. She had grown up on a diet of Nickelodeon and Disney Channel (which I assume doesn't show good Disney stuff like classic movies or Mickey Mouse cartoons). It will be interesting to see about 90 year olds toting around 1990s rap on boom boxes in the future.
