I guess I'm the only regular member here that saw Shari Lewis back in 1961 when she had her first childrens TV show.

This was so long ago it seems more like a dream, but thanks to YouTube many of the old "filmed" preserved copies of early TV shows are being saved for future generations.

As I recall, magician Mark Wilson's "Magic Land of Alakazam" aired at 8:00am followed by "The Shari Lewis Show" at 8:30am back in 1961.

Shari's skill had no equal among children's entertainers, she was the best. Her ability to tell a story using Lamb Chop or Charlie Horse, along with that beautiful speaking voice was pure joy to watch.

And she could sing too! I think Shari was having fun.

I remember the shows "Lamb Chop's Play Along" and "Charlie Horse's Mystical Pizzeria" (or something) from the late 90's on PBS back in the day. It still boggles the mind why they took those great shows off, and Mr Rogers, for that matter. Different generations to appeal to, I guess.

My thanks to PBS, "Lamb Chop's Play Along" was my favorite Shari Lewis show.

I've mentioned before that the Children's Television Workshop charged a premium price for "Sesame Street", and many local PBS stations produced their own childrens shows.

But by the late 70's, in order to pay up for Sesame Street, stations in smaller markets cancelled local productions and used that money for Sesame Street. No station could afford to be without Sesame Street under pressure from parents, schools and kids.

By the 90's, Sesame Street was so expensive that almost all alternative childrens programming was gone from the PBS system except products from CTW.

I still have recorded tapes of Lamb Chop's Play Along. Loved it. I also love the episode of The Nanny that she was on.

Shari gets extra points for Charlie Horse. What a cool puppet character.

That is where my mom's cancer originated. God bless them both.
