2013 IRS Tax Filing Delay

eddstarr88 4 months 15 days ago Posts: 13269	The IRS has issued a general update that any early 2012 tax returns received in January will not be processed until January 30, 2013. IRS processing will be delayed because of tax law changes Congress made in the American Taxpayer Relief Act to seal the fiscal cliff deal signed late on January 2, 2013. If you are expecting a tax refund in late January of early February to help with bills, you must factor this delay in how you manage your personal finances. According to the IRS, "Don't count on getting your refund by a certain date to make major purchases or pay other financial obligations". Normally I use my tax refund to offset my rent, but that may not happen in time for me this year until March. I wanted you guys to be aware of this situation. 1040 Filing Notice...

My husband doesn't get his W2 from the Military until like the 24th or 27th anyway so we can't file until then but we normally do tax slayer the SECOND it's up on his mypay website and get the return into our account a week later. Sounds like it will take slightly longer now. I swear, it DOES seem like it's later and later you can do it ever year. That's what we are doing, paying off a bit of debt and getting faster internet. We had switched internet companies in July when we dropped cable. What a mistake that was. Yes, it's cheaper but unfortunatly in our area we can only get a speed of 1.something and it's not fast enough to watch netflix on one xbox and then watch youtube or something on the computer. We've been so spoiled with high speed, It's hard to imagine how we got by with dial up back in the day

eddstarr88 4 months 13 days ago Posts: 13269	I've gotten used to getting my tax refund as soon as possible but the last couple of years my W2 wasn't available until the last day of January. By law employers have until January 31st to distribute W2's, but that was back when offices typed the old IRS carbon-less Wage & Withholding forms. I haven't seen anything like that since the Reagan administration, lol. Today a W2 is a simple menu selection, to display or send email style. Employers have no reason to wait until the last day of January. But now the IRS is pushing back it's processing window. This truly bums me out.

Sunriser 4 months 12 days ago Posts: 7684	That sucks, but usually doesn't affect me because my husband likes to test my anxiety and wait until April (by law I have to file with him because of some ridiculous tax rules.) One year he waited until April 15th to get his stuff together. He woke me up at 11:30pm because he couldn't access my online filing account! Nearly gave me a heart attack. I had to call my Father and wake him up, who had processed everything the year before. I shouldn't be filing taxes at all, but I need that money back every year! I will just be happy the year I only have one W-2 to deal with. Last year I had 4... I think it will be similar this time around. I will already have 3 W-2's for 2013 because my last paycheck came last week, I collected unemployment, and I went back to work for my husband part-time. So there you go. I guess my goal is to get 4 this year.

Alyssa Branen 4 months 10 days ago Posts: 4237	I reaaaaally wish we could get moving on it, especially with the whole debt ceiling crap again threatening to not pay my husband (Military) if they can't get it resolved. I'm trying not to stress over it, as last time this happened I stressed way to much and in the end it all worked out, but of course the media plays it up and gets you super worried.

eddstarr88 4 months 5 days ago Posts: 13269	I'm always happy to be getting money back each year at about this time. For sure I will file my tax return as soon as my W-2 is available. Sounds like the IRS will have quite a backlog of early filers to deal with by the end of January.
