You don't have to be very old to know what a good 1960's song is. As long as you like it, that's all that counts. What are the best songs of the 60s?

All I can tell you is what I remember from one night in 1969.

The song "Nights in White Satin" was released in 1967 and it did not make much of an impact, judging by my observations and my older sister plus her mob of friends from high school. The song seemed to be coming from a place where "pop songs" never tread, if you catch my meaning.

By 1969 the song was low on the music charts and station play lists. That's when something unexpected happen. One of the network teen music shows, I'm not sure which one, started airing filmed music recordings from other countries. One segment always featured videos from Germany and the UK.

I was not prepared for my reaction to hearing "Nights in White Satin" from my television - it sounded so much cooler than on the radio. But what amazed me was seeing Justin Hayward looking at me through the TV screen while he sang that haunting melody. Once I saw him I couldn't get that song outta my mind.

And I'm not the only one cuz the next day "Nights in White Satin" was all over the radio. My sister and her crazy friends were screaming over Justin Hayward and the popularity of this song continued to build to the point that the song was re-released for a second time - and has since achieved legendary status among 60's music lovers.

Here is the actual video footage from the German music show "Beat-Club" that I saw on American television back in 1969. Justin Hayward caused a sensation with the airing of this video here in the states. This is the edited "Nights in White Satin" without the poem "Late Lament", you can hear the record cut off as the bridge orchestration starts.

    MOODY BLUES - 1967...

Here is the remastered track from later updates...

I'm a huge Elvis fan, so any of his songs from the 60s is top notch for me.
If I Can Dream from his comeback special is pretty good.

This has to be one of the signature songs of the decade. A prime example of Great Britain's pop cultural dominance of the Go-Go 60's.

From 1967, a song that will outlive the generation that created it:
