Is Google a one trick pony?

eddstarr88 4 months 19 days ago Posts: 13263	Major media market talking heads keep harking on Google and it's struggles with moving beyond search. Maybe shareholders are impatient but I'm still thinking that Google needs time to try new ideas out, or a different spin on old ideas like Google TV. Any thoughts?

stake n sheak 4 months 19 days ago Posts: 2119	They are at least fantastic at email. Any time I log in to any other free webmail provider, I am horrified. I have no complaints about youtube which they own now. I have gone from Mapquest to Microsoft Streets & Trips to Google Maps and for some reason stay on the latter. Street view is awesome and while I don't use Google Earth much, it's fun. I don't know how profitable any of these things are. But their revenue stream in all products is advertising and client information. Privacy concerns aside, they do what they do for me well. Their store for Play and phone apps is another source of revenue now. Not everything they throw at the wall sticks, but some does and they throw a lot. In all, they make a lot of money. I will say this about any successful company: Jerkoff investors who demand that amount increase megafold every year should please go away.

These investors just want to make a quick buck and could care less about the companies long term future. Google has been successful because they didn't except status quo. If you would have worked at the top for Yahoo back in the 90s and tried to tell them to do what google does today they would have fired you. A simple home page without ads? No way! Free email with unlimited storage? No way we must charge extra for that? Free maps with satellite and street view? Can't be done! A news search engine that collects news stories from 1000s of websites? Wouldn't work and would steer people away from yahoo! I could go one and on, but you get the idea. Don't fix what isn't broken.

But the landscape of tech keeps changing fast enough that there's pressure to always introduce the "new" or "next". I use Google everyday without much thought about it's policies or future. I use what I like. If it changes then I deal with those changes, otherwise I go with the tech flow. But it still bothers me when news reports on companies like Google highlight the failures and shortcomings. Not every tech company is falling like Microsoft but some reporters love seeing top companies lose it.

Sunriser 4 months 16 days ago Posts: 7684	Google is in no way dead. They are constantly looking for new talent- people with the vision and knowledge to create new projects. Microsoft also does this, however, they are much less willing to push out something that isn't perfect or doesn't get good feedback. Google has made some weird changes lately that have actually made their applications more difficult to use. They just need to invest in streamlining everything they have going currently and then they can move forward from there. And you can't blame them for losing the Chinese market...
