Gerry Anderson, father of 'Supermarionation' dies at 83!

Gerry Anderson, the creator of 'Supermarionation' shows including Thunderbirds, Stingray and Joe 90, has died at the age of 83.

Since joining Retro Junk back in 2008 I've used the site as a staging point for my explorations of early television shows first seen in my childhood. My memory is pretty good from 1965 and going forward. But I start to have issues when I think back before 1964 - except for the work of Gerry Anderson. 
SUPERCAR from 1962, this was the one show every kid I knew in grade school talked about. From flying across the continent to undersea exploration, it was the car that could do it all. This was Gerry Anderson's first show to air in the USA via syndication and the start of my life viewing and enjoying British TV as the 60's progressed. But it only got better!
Opening/Closing credits for XL5...
FIREBALL XL-5 from 1963 was the series that took me into space while NASA's Gemini program was in full swing. This was TV heaven for me, on patrol with Steve Zodiac and his squad of space police officers. This was the series that got everyone's attention with original songs that aired in later episodes. In fact, the "Fireball" song in the closing credits got my older sister and her friends interested in watching too - go figure.
STINGRAY from 1964 got heavy into music and romance as Gerry and Sylvia Anderson tried to add more character to their characters. But my friends and I were only interested in the super submarine of course.
My Favorite Scene...
THUNDERBIRDS from 1966 is the series that made Gerry Anderson a household name in the USA and I have to admit that his production team really outdid themselves with one of the best pilot episodes, "Trapped In The Sky" about a supersonic transport that needs help to land after a bomb is found attached to the landing gear. Even after all these years It's still fun to watch all the model work that made Gerry's works so famous.
Gerry will always have a special place in my heart. He made the future exciting!
