Alyssa Branen 5 months 8 days ago Posts: 4237	Sadly, my 8 year old learned the truth about Santa a few weeks ago. I was sad, probably sadder than him LOL. He took it very well. It's hard to keep believing when the other kids on the street no longer do. They are about his age but they go to church twice a week and are heading into the age where the parents focus more on the "reason for the season" part and push Santa out of the way. We still went bowling with Santa yesterday though. You go and bowl a game or two for a dollar and if your score is higher than the jolly guy dressed as Santa, you get free passes to come and bowl (plus free shoe rental)that don't expire. Another Santa will come through the neighborhoods this weekend on a firetruck and firefighters will be walking beside it handing out mini candy canes. This is actually the first year we won't have a picture of my son posing with Santa. He never cared for doing that anyway, i'm a bit sad over it but I figure now that he knows that other than St Nick, the flying reindeer and elves and north pole part are not true, it seems silly to MAKE him get his picture taken. Plus he's like nearly 4'6 and way to big for Santa's lap LOL

When I went to private school a former teacher came as a guess speaker and broke the news to all of us kids about Santa during chapel. Some of the younger kids looked devastated and I'm still surprised they let her do it. By 5th grade I only knew one kid my age that still believed in Santa. I was over to his house playing Sega and I asked him where he got one of his games. His answer was "from Santa". I didn't say anything, but I was a little shocked he still believed. This was after the talk from Mrs. Hex. He ended up being gay not that it matters.

eddstarr88 5 months 6 days ago Posts: 13269	It's a universal right of passage when kids reach that Santa, real or not, evolution. That's when the opinions of other kids run into what parents want. And that makes "the Santa question" one of the most important moments in a kids development. Santa's real but in a surreal kinda way. When I learned the truth, I thought all adults were crazy to have even invented all that Santa stuff. But that's when the deeper meanings of this special time of year happen. When I was little I would run downstairs on Christmas morning to see what Santa brought me. But on that 1st Christmas when I knew Santa was only a story, I still ran downstairs that morning - only to watch the sun slowly rise while I stood in front of the Christmas tree, fully illuminated and surrounded by gifts. That's when I found the Santa that's stayed with me for the rest of my life. Btw, he didn't look anything like the Coca Cola Santa from those magazine ads.

Bassman, when my son was in pre-k he randomly said, while in the bathtub that Ms Norma (his teacher's assistant) told him there was no Santa and that it was just my husband and I giving him presents. This was well past Christmas (that was why it was so random) so I just let it go and told him not to listen to her LOL he was only 4. My husband was pretty ticked, he wanted to go up there and snap at her but I said to just let it go, as it was long past Christmas. Now that he knows at age 8 and a half, I just explained it to him that we ALL get to be Santa now, and I explained more about the Toys for Tots. He knew about it of course but it was harder for him to grasp why it was so important to give toys, when he thought Santa gave toys to all kids. Now he knows that doesn't happen and that they truely are in desperate need of the donations. I still want to keep the same traditions of filling stockings and only opening ONE present Christmas eve. My husband wanted to switch to opening ALL presents Christmas eve. Haha I won that argument :p I told my son if we ever have another child he can help play Santa.

I think it's an awesome right of passage I had as a kid and I never cared that my parents "lied" about him (I still got presents for Christmas after, they just no longer said from Santa) and my son found out this year he's not real and he didn't cry or feel scarred for life over it. However I've read debates on this topic (they normally pop up this time of year) and there are some people that think parents who lie to their kids about Santa being real are horrible parents and that you shouldn't lie to your kids.
