vkimo 5 months 9 days ago Posts: 2098 Super Mod Editor	I'm sure you all heard about the school shooting in Connecticut. I could only imagine the horror those kids must have faced. What are your thoughts and opinions on these types of acts? They're are getting more frequent. I think it's almost like a snowball effect. As more deranged people see others killing, it emboldens themselves. I'm almost afraid to be in public places now, I'm also thinking about applying for a concealed carry license in case I find myself in a similar scenario and need to defend myself.

ActionBastard 5 months 9 days ago Posts: 4903	There was a shooting at the clackamas town center mall kinda near my house on tuesday. A few people died. The gunman was a young man who was distraught because he couldnt join the marines due to an injury he'd sustained.

Derk 5 months 9 days ago Posts: 2250	It goes without saying that these acts are always disgusting and extremely sad. This one just seems even more so due to the nature of it. All of those innocent kids killed before their lives even started. And the ones that survived had their innocence and childhood torn from them due to a deranged maniac. They are definitely getting more frequent, that's for sure. It's insane to think that you can't go see a movie or drop your kid off at elementary school without worrying about someone killing you/family/friends. I certainly don't want to get political, but I think something needs to be done. I'm not sure what, but something needs to change. I will say that I admire the way some reporters are mentioning the killer's name as little as possible.

Otown407Soldier 5 months 9 days ago Posts: 1860	It's a tragedy and that guy had to be so weak he attacked the innocent of the innocent. I don't have any kids but my thoughts and prays are with them. I wonder are people getting crazier or is it just so many more people in the world that the small percentage of complete psychos is just more than it was before. Plus all the new media we hear so many more things from everywhere so much faster. Plus the media interviewing the kids after the incident was pretty distasteful, I am glad they aren't saying this guys name much though, it's a start.

I agree, interviewing the kids wasn't exactly the way to go. I'd say they'd seen enough for one day and should have been left alone.

Alyssa Branen 5 months 8 days ago Posts: 4237	This one made me cry quite a bit as a mom. Unfortunatly im not sure what gun laws would do. Were talking about non rational ppl that dont follow the law anyway. If they want a gun, they will get one. The law doesnt stop crazy ppl.

Also they just said that the person had Aspergers syndrome and another disorder. I'm one with Aspergers Syndrome myself. I'm more worried that I and people like me would be stereotyped as a maniac or someone that would do some awful thing like this. Knowing Society this will come to pass. As for the shooting. We have seen this far too often for far too long. What makes this so wrong is that this was at a elementary school. My prayers are with the families who won't be able to have the joys of seeing their kids opening their presents on Christmas morning or telling them to have a good day at school. That's what makes this truly tragic. I would congratulate the teachers that kept the other kids safe and also one brave child who saved his classmates by leading them out. That kid should be awarded something for being that brave.

No matter how strict the laws are there are people who would steal other people's guns or buy them illegally. It's unavoidable.

I mean I can't say for sure, maybe it would slow some of this down to ban it, but maybe not, because people can get guns illegally from somewhere. Money talks I should point out that while my husband and I both agree that a ban probably will not do much good in regards to nutcases who'll get it if they want it, we differ on gun thoughts in overall LOL. He has expressed quite a few times wanting a gun to be kept in our house and I personaly do NOT want one and don't think we need one. In my opinion, and this is just ME, I think that no matter how well versed my husband may be in gun safety and training, accidents in the home can still happen and i'd rather not risk it.

Adam's mom had words with the town's school board - maybe over performance or behavior. Whatever it was, something went wrong at school even though Adam was considered a bright kid by classmates and neighbors". I want to hear more about the Lanza family. Something went horribly wrong in that house and so far Adam's dad, Peter Lanza, talked to a few reporters Saturday but offered nothing except the usual "he was a good kid". That's not good enough. The dynamics of that family played a role in this tragedy and discovering that might explain why Adam Lanza drove all the way back to his old school in Newtown and, within minutes, killed 20 children, six adults and himself.

randomuser2349 5 months 5 days ago Posts: 854	I was actually a bit worried. I have family friends in Newtown. Thank god they are safe. I don't think this was purely copycat either. I've seen many incidents like this prior to this. There was the Polytechnic shooting back in the 80's in Montreal. Even before that, there were 3 school shootings in Canada within 3 years back in the 70's, all of which were fatal. Also, there were no fatal 2010 shootings in North America to my knowledge.

blueluigi22 5 months 5 days ago Posts: 56	This whole event was definitely very tragic, and it shows that it's one of those sad things in life where a fatal shooting could occur at a place where you're around. However, what I don't get is why people are trying to change the gun laws or further reinforce American security so that they can prevent a tragic event like this from ever happening again. The stone cold truth of this whole thing is that there's no way you can prevent somebody from going on a total shooting spree, no matter how strict the police, and American security tries to be. If I wanted to, I can go around in public with a gun in my hands and start shooting people around me. Who would be able to stop me before I start to kill anybody if they're unable to see what I was doing beforehand. That's really how it all comes down to when it comes to tragic accidents like these. Again, it really sucks terribly that some guy went completely crazy to shoot people like that. But to go around thinking that America would be able to reinforce the laws to prevent another fatal shooting from ever happening again. That's a very unrealistic expectation. Sad as it is, we all got to accept that stuff like this have always, and will continue to go on as life goes on.

The more crazy people the more shootings, if they plan to kill themselves it probably won't matter how many people are packin. Hell, the crazy bastards might get off dying in a huge shoot out too. There's no easy answer, and both sides for a lot of ideas make good points. I just hope it well thought out and nothing rushed to shut the media up. No matter what happens you can't stop this stuff sometimes, people will always find a way, for good or bad intentions.

I get this, but I think it's more of an emotional platitude spread by the NRA than a network effect predicted by real world factors. America has been having this discussion, let's say at the current level since the Brady bill. Keeping guns available for lawful citizens over the past 25 years has not decreased these kind of events. (There have, however, been 2 million denied purchases due to background checks. Which is great, but less than 2 percent of all attempted purchases. I bet quite a few of those people went on to get a weapon some other way.) We talk about these needs and rights. I think it's funny how the small segment of the population who is actually affected by this (private, legal gun owners) is able to control the conversation so much. Well what kind of guns does a lawful citizen need? For self-defense, a six-shooter? For hunting, a shotgun? Maybe taking away everything else from the people willing to follow the law will make the murderous psychos either more obvious or less able to do damage to such large numbers of people.
