Why are people doing away with traditional business?

Why are these industries already doing away with traditional or brick-and-mortar business? Why have we evolved to such a do-it-cheap mindset? I'm not saying internet business is good or bad, but switching to one mode exclusively over the other is really having an impact on the economy and the way we communicate in day-to-day life? WTF? Why can't we just resist the inevitable by mobilizing a mass global effort? I am not saying to resist internet business itself, and I am not trying to sound alarmist, but man.

I think it's just waaay cheaper to sell online. Every store I go to when I want to buy something, I see online offers the same item for much less. An online business can be run out of your house most times, no renting a building, hiring employees, etc.

Actually vkimo I'd love to start an online business from home. I'm just a bit pissed since the other more traditional stores are being close to abandoned.

Yeah, I know it is a bummer. They just can't compete. There's this great knife shop where I live, the only one in driving distance. Their prices are usually 30-40% higher than online. I still buy from them though because I can actually SEE the item in person. The owner told me he has tons of people go in, look at the knife they want, then order it online.

Not only is it cheaper, a lot of people enjoy the convenience of shopping from home. Plus, there's more opportunities to find what you're looking for online.

Having said that, I do agree that actually going into a store definitely has its benefits and is something I hope isn't eventually phased out completely. Something like clothes, for example, sucks to buy online because you can't try them on.

A lot of these smaller establishment are just flat out rip-offs. Why would I buy from them when I can get the exact same thing online for half the price? Even the larger stores are generally way overpriced. I try and do as much installation of things myself too because the installers charge way too much.

It generally comes down to supply and demand and the overhead cost of the business. If the store is renting space in a mall they are going to have to change more than renting space in a strip center in the hood. If the product and service they offer sells at a low rate they have to make more money off the customers they do get.

A good customer in the eyes of the business is one that pays full price. A bad customer is one that nickles and dimes. I generally meet someone where in the middle. I know if I nickles and dime too much the sales person is the one that suffers. I will pay more for a good sales person and leave feeling good knowing that I made the sales persons day. I will not be happy being taken advantage of or talked down to however. I have walked away many times because the sales people were rude and pushy. This is why as a sales person I don't use those tactics except with customers that are calling just to waste my time. I treat customers the way I want to be treated. It pays off because I'm always one of the top 5 sales reps in the company. Some of my metrics are bad however because I will not push crap and things the customer doesn't want.

If these smaller shops want to secede they need to find ways to offer something the big guys don't. Maybe a free massage with every oil change ha ha.....

There are still opportunities to create a successful retail business in areas that online businesses can't compete. This would be in dealing with products that are not cost efficient to be shipping. Large items, or items with hazardous properties (fuel, paints, etc.). Of course, the service industry can never be shipped either. But yes, small, non-grocery, items are being purchased more online with each passing day.

You gotta "vote with your wallet" and show that your community is more important than every last dollar in your pocket. And tell your friends and family. And check with little stores before you go to Bigbox or online. If they don't have it maybe they can special order?

It depends on what the thing it. Sometimes I want to buy small trinkets, and including shipping they cost over $10. When I could just go to a local mall or some place and get the small trinket for $5 without shipping.
