Xmas songs you just can't stand?

    I heard that on the radio a couple days ago via The Morning X. I was laughing when one of the hosts added the dog barking. That was a good cover just from how silly it sounds.
    Thats right I ran over the Taco Bell dog...... I got banned from Taco Bell for life.

    HEY - I found it, Luciano Pavarotti sang "Ave Maria" on the TV special "Christmas At Notre-Dame de Montreal" in 1978, an it's been a Christmas selection ever since I betcha!

    		 Yeah, I can't understand the attraction to Ave Maria. Really has to be one of the least "Christmasy" Christmas songs out there.

    		 As far as I know Ave Maria has no connection to Christmas. Pavarotti sang it for the Pope, one of his favorites I guess, and was happy to add the song as part of his Christmas special.

    By 1980 the song started showing up everywhere, even at grade school holiday pageants.

    		 @timothy: That's because few people have ever heard of the song. I think I recall someone online griping about it a couple years ago, but that's my only experience with it.

    Many songs weren't originally xmas songs & have little or nothing to do with xmas, but they got kinda highjacked anyway. This includes the most iconic xmas song of all, jingle bells. Jingle bells was originally a thanksgiving song & really has nothing to do with xmas.

    		 That's interesting cuz I was just thinking ya don't hear Jingle Bells as much as back in the 90's. But I don't spend as much time in the malls today either.

    Besides Jingle Bells, there is at least one other "Christmas" song I know of that has no mention of Christmas...or anything associated with Christmas in its lyrics..."Winter Wonderland"!

    		 I recently heard a cover that Paul McCartney did of "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting On An Open Fire)". I can't say I liked it, but that's because of a lyric change. The original lyrics refer to "turkey and some mistletoe", but McCartney changed it to "holly and some mistletoe". It was enough to ruin the cover for me. Billy Idol is a vegetarian, but he still wears leather. "Weird" Al Yankovic is a vegan, but he still sings songs about non-vegan food. McCartney could've relaxed for this song.

    		 There are so many minor variations on all the christmas classics that I don't even notice miniscule things like turkey->mistletoe. With most such songs, people can't even decide which version of the lyrics is the "correct" one.
