For stores, online or brick & mortar, the most important shopping day is the day after, (or night of), Thanksgiving. The further into the 21st century we go the more this seems to be true. But if the day after Thanksgiving is the new Christmas, at least sales wise, then this will advance everything else that goes along with the holiday. By 2025, Thanksgiving will be the holiday that Christmas ate.

When I was a kid (about a decade ago)you didn't hear or see anything christmas related until they started advertising the santa claus parade in late November, and now you see christmas decorations in stores by October and chritmas ads by early November. Now Christmas has become inescapable as early as it is.

Drahken 6 months 1 day ago Posts: 2141	Stores starting early is all about the almighty dollar. People decorating early can be for many different reasons. For example, I get most of my outside decorations up around mid november so that I'm not out there trying to do them in the middle of a blizzard. However, I don't start turning them on until december, and I don't start putting inside ones up till sometime in december. Other reasons might include beating the neighbors to it, getting "infected" by all the holiday stuff in stores and so wanting to get some stuff up at home too, just wanting to hurry up and get chrstmas going, or a number of other possible reasons. Personally, I tend to be rather odd about xmas. I wind up listening to holiday music & watching specials in may or august, but when it's actually holiday time I wind up barely noticing until it's here & gone. The problem with thanksgiving is that it has no real identity of it's own. It's like xmas minus the tree & presents. This makes it very easy for thanksgiving to get lost into xmas.

bassman21 6 months 22 hours ago Posts: 12786	A couple of people on my Facebook have posted pictures of their tree already. Still a little too early if you ask me, but what ever. I remember stores putting out Christmas stuff as early as September even back in the 80s. There are a lot of early bird shoppers that think they're getting a deal by buying early. A store would be stupid not to capitalize on it. Also they need more than a month or so to sell all of their seasonal stock. I remember a family in our neighborhood back in the 80s putting their tree up a couple of days before Halloween. I remember thinking how odd it was. It was common back then for people to start decorating around Thanksgiving. We always put ours up and decorated the outside the first week of December. I remember characters on TV putting their Christmas tree up on Christmas Eve. I always wondered if there were people that really waited that long to put a tree up. It seems like a waste of time to only have it up for a week. What annoys me is some people around here will leave their decorations up and continue to TURN THEM ON into Febuary!

They just want to make as much money off of gullible shoppers that they can so they will put up decorations as early as possible to get you in the mood. Personally I think it's ridiculous how people put so much into one day and then the day after they are so sick of it, that they are ready to throw the damn tree out the window! LOL If we're gonna prep so long for Christmas then it should be a week long celebration, but then jobs would hate that idea because they're not gonna want to give you a week off. They barely want to close for Christmas itself.

Drahken 6 months 10 hours ago Posts: 2141	What I find idiotic are the opposite people. There are some people who only put up the decorations a couple days before xmas, then take them down the 26th. What's the point of going through all that hassle just to have them up for a couple days?? As far as a week long holiday, xmas was originally 12 days long, with the 25th being the first day. I guess people got tired of getting 12 partridges in pear trees every year.

Alyssa Branen 6 months 8 hours ago Posts: 4237	This is going to sound weird, then again maybe not because I KNOW i'm not the only one.. i'm not Christian or religious, but I still celebrate Christmas. We've always focused on the giving, the decorating, the happyness of the season, the baking, the family, the exchanging of gifts, Santa, etc but never much about Jesus . Which I know, for Christians seems stupid because they will say he is the reason for the season, so maybe I should say we celebrate X-mas or whatever you'd say, it doesn't really matter.., I don't know, but anyway, because of this, we don't follow the whole put your tree up (the tree isn't a Christian thing anyway) a few days before Christmas and leave it up until sometime in January, which I know many religious folks do. We put it up a week or so after Thanksigiving and take it down before New Years because for us, we've had a good month of having it up and enjoying it, and after the 25th, it's really OVER for us. I enjoy this holiday more Thanksgiving and Halloween, so I like to listen to the music and watch the movies probably starting Thanksgiving afternoon, just to stretch it out a litte. For me it's depressing to stretch it out after the holiday is actually OVER, but starting it a few weeks early doesn't bother me , Now I should point out that growing up, Christmas day we never went anywhere. After opening presents and eating breakfast, it was just basicly cleaning up the mess, vegging out and playing with our toys. We didn't go off to visit anyone. The holiday was pretty much OVER. A few times when I was younger a few days after Christmas we'd go visit my grandmother in the nursing home and meet up with my uncle and aunts and nephews that lived a bit away and we'd exchange gifts, but that only happened just a few times. For me Thanksgiving has always been boring. It was always just our immediate family, just the five of us. We only did a big thanksgiving ONE year. The rest of the years it was just us eating Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatos and cranberry sauce which honestly, is a meal anyone could make any old time. It was just boring. It would have been less so had we gotten to have bigger family get togethers more often I'm sure. I think we have this discussion on here every year. Or rather argument over when the proper time is to put up and take down a tree LOL
