remastered vs not remastered

    		 I don't like when the remaster all my favorite christmas specials or anythign actually, I like to remember them just the way they were. Like I was looking for the grinch and rudolph but all I could find was the remastered versions..... sooo 2questions

    how do i tell if they are or not like by watching it not just reading the cover?

    could anyone find a clip of grinch not remastered for me?

    		 I think it really depends. Some movies are in such bad shape they really have no choice. I have some DVD's of movies that were left untouched and they look and sound horrible. The digital media just brings out the imperfections. Sometimes they screw the sound effects up delete scenes or do gay shit like Spielberg and change guns into walkie-talkies. I don't like the changes like they did in Starwars either. Its OK to clean a movie up, but don't try to change what it originally was. If you want to do that make a remake of the movie.

    		 I have a not remastered episode of the Mary Tyler Moore TV show. It's on 16mm film so it's not digital media, so I very doubt it was 'touched up' a bit. It was one of those prints made during rerun syndication when it was shipped to different TV stations for showing. This has the old 1976-to-1985 Viacom logo at the end of the credits. It's all reddish due to color degrading.

    		 If it is remastered it might say on the box, but it might not. If it is not remastered it definitely will not say. So you have no way to tell "this is definitely not remastered" just by looking at the case.

    Also "remaster" is a term that could mean anything. Some kind of "mastering" process must be done when transferring from one format to another. If it is not original media (probably film in Grinch's case) then something has been done to it...audio and picture levels have to be set in the transfer. You could research the release version by date...for instance in the DVD from 2000 the Grinch looks yellow instead of green, so you might avoid that one.

    		 Yea the term remastered or digitally remastered is a broad term and it will usually say "remastered" on the DVD if any extensive methods were used. Virtually all movies have some sort of remastering when they are ported to DVD or blu-ray. Those that aren't can look pretty bad as film ages with time.

    With the audio it may just involve boosting the highs and lows and using noise reduction techniques from the master reels. Other times particularly if its being remastered in 5.1 it will involve a lot more work. Many older 33 mm reels used 3 audio channels (dialog, music and effects) even though the movie itself was originally mono. To improve the music quality they may replace the original mono music using a better quality source that's in stereo as well as insert new sound effects. They can also take indifferent sounds from the original mono track and channel them to different speakers to make it stereo using digital signal processing. Believe it or not virtually all of the sounds we hear in movies is added after it's filmed in the editing room.

    The picture is a whole other task. Again they get a master reel and digitally correct any imperfections one frame at a time using software. They also correct the hue and color balance amongst other things. If you have ever watched the deleted scenes of a movie on DVDs you'll notice that some look very bad (will even have the counter) even through they are new movies. This is because they just added the raw footage to the DVD without cleaning it up in the editing room using the above methods.

    So all you can really do is look on the box. If the audio says "mono" or just "stereo" for movies made after the 70s then you know little has probably been done to the sound. If it says 5.1 something probably has. With the picture unless the box says you really can't tell. Like I said some correction is practically required.
