Having to wear braces.

    		 Remember the agony of braces?

    For me, it only had one benefit: Improving my smile. Other than that, it was 100% torture.

    		 i remember in my youth when at school and seeing kids with braces on their first day with having them. tears in their eyes the whole time

    		 Wow, I was just thinking that most of my best friends from my school years had braces. I never told you guys about my friend Sabrina. She had braces all through high school but everyone loved her killer sense of humor. She used to pick on me for having "perfect" teeth, then I mentioned all my dental fillings!

    		 A lot of my school friends had braces and they would get the coloured rubber things in them. I never did, but should of. The dentist told me that I would have to have them on for four years and then a plate for two years, which just sounded like torture. My mother gave me the choice of either getting braces or getting a horse, needless to say I went for the horse.

    		 I had braces on my legs at a very young age, knock kneed. I hated it, but at least I could take them off.

    		 I had braces on my teeth from September 1978 (8th grade) to September 1981 (11th grade). The most embarrassing part was when I had to wear what was known as "headgear", starting around halfway through 9th grade. It was a metal piece that came out of your mouth and was held on by an elastic strap that went around the back of your head, hence its name. Whenever I was out and about with my parents, kids would often stare at me, many times asking their parents what that is I was wearing. I believe I stopped wearing the headgear either just before, or shortly after starting 10th grade. After I got my braces off shortly after starting 11th grade, I had to wear a retainer on my upper teeth, which was a plate with a wire that went across the front of my teeth that I could take out and put in on my own at any time.

    		 Oh yeah! They poked at my cheeks, gave me sores in my mouth and were really sore sometimes especially after being tightened. I also remember getting a list of foods that I couldn't have while I was wearing my braces. This included popcorn, taco chips, pretzels, bubble gum, toffee, and even corn on the cob just to name a few.

    		 We never had the money for braces and I rarely went to the dentist to be told I needed them. I remember a few kids having braces, but never remember anyone making fun of them for it. I remember several kids having retainers and taking them out to eat lunch. I made fun of this one kid in second grade after he put it on his tray to each lunch. I made him cry and have no idea why I even made fun of him. :(

    I have one tooth on the top that is pushed back from a baby tooth that didn't come out until the permanent one came through. On the bottom a couple of my teeth are crooked from my wisdom teeth pushing my other teeth forward. Overall not too bad, however I have had over $5000 in fillings, root canals and other dental work done. I remember some kids having some really messed up grills and having no choice but to get them.

    		 My worst memory of wearing braces were those little rubber spacers they put between my teeth the week prior to actually having the braces put on. I got them just before school started in my sophomore year of hs & I was used to waking up sore the morning after the 1st few days of football practice but I was totally unprepared for that same kind of pain in my mouth. After warming up the body aches & soreness went away but nothing could sooth that pain in my mouth.:cry:

    		 I had so much dental work done, it's not even funny. I'm just glad I had it all done before I was 16. It's much easier and better for your self-esteem to have it done early. I first got stuff in my mouth at the age of 8. It was always so painful. I had an expander (that had to be "cranked" every few days) and an appliance to correct my overbite. Then I had braces on my upper front teeth to align them. Then I had full braces when I was 13/14. And my retainers never fit me, but I have a permanent one on my bottom teeth that is a bitch to clean.

    Oh, and I also had spacers for two weeks! OMG, so painful! Everything I had done was so uncomfortable. I was an expert at tolerating pain by the end.

    Even though my front teeth up top are not perfect anymore (they shifted a bit), I would never go through all of that again. I even had to have procedures to fix my bite because my jaw kept slipping out of place and it hurt when I ate. Ugh.

    		 I had braces for years as a younger lad. In fact, I had them for several years longer than I was supposed to, due to financial issues. I agree with the torturous aspect of it, but that said, I DO feel better having straighter teeth. Not emotionally mind you, but physically. It's less actual pain and stress now.

    If you can "grin and bear" it, if you'll pardon the pun...it DOES get better.
