    I get this trouble with my N64 MC all the time....
    It also does it too my Deadly Arts game too....

    Probably the battery in the cartridge needs replacing.

    I am having trouble playing re 2 on the n64. The game won't let me save. It just keeps saying " save failed". Any ideas?
    edit: It got worse. Now its cleared all save data. ALL OF IT. And it stil won't save.
    edit 2: And now it fixed itself. Weird.
