The Republican Party's goal to make life for the very rich a "tax-free" experience has hit a snag. Ordinary GOP voters don't seem to like rich guys, especially if they're named Mitt. According to the Washington Post: "Rick Santorum swept all three GOP contests on Tuesday (2/7/2012), declaring himself 'the conservative alternative' to Barack Obama". Mr. Romney caught heat over his less than 15% marginal tax on investment income for 2010. Yet I seem to recall that, at least since the Reagan administration, Republicans have been pushing for [u]zero[/u] taxes on all forms of capital gains including investments. So what gives? It's cool to be rich as long as you keep your income a secret, don't do anything gainful and no one knows your name?

Sunriser 1 year 3 months ago Posts: 7684	Political talks on the internets! :O Believe it or not, one of my co-workers used to work with him. He didn't say much about the guy, he seemed to like him, although he did have some mutterings over business practices. But I'm very sure Gov. Romney is much more moderate than he is pretending to be, otherwise MA wouldn't have given him a sniff. Jon Stewart is also spot-on about him having "John Kerry" written all over him.

Shazbot 1 year 3 months ago Posts: 4622	There is no truly "likeable" GOP candidate from the perspective of both personality and competence. Santorum hates gays and has a very smug and unwarranted sense of moral superiority, Romney's a shifty greaseball who should be working on a used car lot, Newt is a sanctimonious, womanizing curmudgeon and Ron Paul (although the most likeable of the bunch) seems like he probably wears a tinfoil hat at home to block out the gamma rays created by a secret pact between the Chinese and aliens from Rigel-7. Out of the bunch, I would probably vote for Paul. Some of his ideas seem good, others seem fucking crazy, but at least he is someone that I probably wouldn't feel like strangling if I met him in person.

It's a complete mockery of the political system and shows how uninformed the average voter is on each candidate's history and political positions.

bassman21 1 year 3 months ago Posts: 12793	I vote for who I think is most qualified to be president. In my opinion Romney is the most qualified. Being a moderate myself I know he will not make a bunch of religious or partisan decisions. It pisses me off how so many republicans vote for who is the biggest religious zealot. They want Obama out yet they will support people like Santorum, Perry and Palin who have no chance of ever winning a presidential election. We have much bigger issues than gay marriage and abortion in this country. Yes a lot of rich people support Romney, but that is because they believe he'll get the economy back on track.

Deleted 1 year 3 months ago Posts: 54340	Although Romney is far from perfect, I think he is the best choice for president out of all the GOP candidates and Obama. After reading about his past accomplishments, it's obvious to me the guy knows how to balance a budget. People complain about how rich he is, but that just shows me that he knows how to take more money in than he spends, unlike the guy who currently occupies the White House. And people who keep saying he is unqualified should compare his past experiences with those that Obama had prior to becoming president...Romney has far more experience than Obama did when he was first elected. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who are upset at the job Obama has been doing that will still vote for him over Romney just because they feel Obama is a more likable guy. The big problem right now is Gingrich and Romney going after each other so much. It is hurting both of their images, and that is why so many voters are staying home at these primaries and caucuses. That's why Rick Santorum was able to walk away with 3 wins the other night...because while Newt and Mitt keep throwing dirt at each other, Santorum walks away clean. The GOP just needs to get their candidate selected so they can stop with all the fighting and concentrate on going after Obama.

LOL, Mitt Romney - would you buy a used car from this man? I remember Mitt's dad, George Romney when he was Governor of Michigan back in the 60's. But George Ronmey was most famous as the president of American Motors (AMC) from 1954. The thought of his son selling used cars might make the old man smile!

Echidna64 1 year 3 months ago Posts: 3603	My prediction is that Santorum's day in the sun is over now that the contraceptive issue is "resolved" I suppose Romney is the best of the bunch (I had my heart set on Huntsman) I think Huntsman would now be perfect as Secretary of State and maybe have Ron Paul be Secretary of the Treasury lol
