I just got done watching the Good Times episode "A Place To Die", and it makes me wonder if it's a good idea to include dramatic scenes in shows intended to be funny. I think it is, depending on what the message is. What do you think?

I think it depends on the show and the decade. Like those "very special episodes".

I like when they do it though some shows can't pull it off. The concept was basically created by Norman Lear starting with All in the Family and other shows followed suit.

There were a lot of them in the 80s that covered a lot of issues including drugs, child molestation, bullying, child abuse, racism and spousal abuse to name a few. For an 80s/90s show I thought the Rosanne did a good job of mixing drama and comedy during most of its run.

Some shows had a fake laugh track and sometimes they put laughs were they shouldn't be. Shows like Good Times had live studio responses. Sometimes the audience had a hard time grasping the seriousness of the scene and they basically ruined it for the TV viewers.

Speaking of laughs where they shouldn't be, there have been some inappropriate laughter in the child molester episode of Diff'rent Strokes.

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air did it a lot. Sometimes it felt really weird, awkward, and out of place, but some were admittedly a bit touching, like when Carlton took a bullet for Will (I think? Something like that, it's been a while) and they always had good messages. The Office tries to be serious/heartwarming a lot too with Jim and Pam but I never cared for it.
