How far do you think the separation of church and state should go? Should it simply be limited to its original premise of allowing everyone to practice religion freely and openly with no government influence and prevent religious values from mingling with laws? Is it going too far to draw a cross for an art project in school, or even a Santa Claus hat? Is it wrong for people working for the government or private businesses to say "Merry Christmas" to people they don't know? Or are you against the entire concept and think America should be an openly Christian-based country?

I think it should be two different monsters. We've seen plenty of problems when they are entangled.

Then again good business grows stronger with solid associations. And cousin, business is a-boomn'...

There was much more to it than taxes going towards churches. People were beaten for what they preached. Read about the Baptists in Virginia and how they were persecuted. Basically separation of church and state when it was coined was to the Baptists at Danbury promising them that they would be able to worship freely as their conscience dictated without the government telling them how, when and where they should worship and what doctrine they had to preach. During colonial times in America, they didn't have religious liberty, but rather tolerance. There is a major difference. Personally the government should keep their nose out of it. That was the original intent. As long as a religion is causing physical harm or danger then leave them alone.

You're right, I erroneously referred to only one aspect of the general idea of the concept, that was my bad and I'll fix it. I'm actually taking a whole course on it this semester so I'm looking forward to it.

It really is an interesting subject. Especially if you are a history buff! Our public education system has basically dumbed down early US history to the point that people think the only injustice committed was to slaves. While I'm not acting like that wasn't a big deal there was so much more to it! The Baptist though probably the most prominent protestant denomination now was extremely persecuted in colonial America. Read up on a preacher John Leland. The man is an American hero and we hear nothing about him.

Yeah, the public education system often taught things and then re-taught them in different ways a few years later, and almost never focused on the many wars and conflicts caused by religion except when it came to how horrible the Nazis were for killing Jews. Although I guess that's better than first grade history books being filled with pictures of what happened at Nanking..

Either way, anyone who truly appreciates history will learn it more accurately later on - every country does it and it's no big deal in my opinion.

I agree to an extent, but the issue I find is when people try to misrepresent terms specifically the one at hand(not you, but people in general) and say that separation of church and state means that a teacher can't wish his/her students a Merry Christmas b/c it "endorses" a religion... And if people actually understood the historical context behind the term separation of church and state they wouldn't believe such a blatant lie.

Hahah, yeah I totally agree with you there. I do like ideas evolving over time, such as Abraham Lincoln and other old Republicans' interpretation of the Declaration of Independence that all men, literally, are created equal, but not when it results in "politically correct" garbage like that which twists the idea in a completely stupid and non-progressive way.
