Is Atheism Turning Into A Religion?

I know exactly what you mean and I completely agree. Hence why I do not associate with atheists. They're generally arrogant and have no concept of the appeal of religious institutions even though they themselves belong to such an institution.

Merriam-Webster defines religion (without using the word "religious" ) as:

"archaic : scrupulous conformity : conscientiousness

a cause, principle, or system of beliefs held to with ardor and faith"

I'm beginning to view a-theism as meaning "anti-theism" instead of non-theism.

I know how you feel. I don't want anything to do with atheists myself.

I've talked with a lot of different atheists over the years. You have the kind of atheist that doesn't make a very bid deal about his/her atheism and could care less what you believe as long as you don't push it on them, and you have the fundamentalist "anti-theist" atheists who act like their lives are defined by their atheism, religious people are the enemy, and they go off the deep end as soon as someone mentions "God" or "church"...even if that person wasn't trying to push their beliefs on anyone. I call them "Dawkins Thumpers", because instead of constantly quoting Bible scriptures at people like a Bible thumper, they constantly quote passages from Richard Dawkins books at you.

Most people that I meet that are outspoken about being atheists are usually full of hate. The ThePunkAssAtheistKid on youtube I just looked up in 22 seconds disagrees, but it is true.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=-PoM1B5nZMI

They spend a great deal of time researching and getting their fact straight and look for people to pick a fight with (debate).

They are generally outcast in society that have found one another on the internet. They have become very powerful and have a great influence on the web. This site used to be controlled by them back in the day. Remember the Legion of bastards? Not an atheists group per say, but most of them were atheists that flamed many people that disagreed with them.

Youtube is largely controlled by them too. Atheists videos get many thumbs up and Christian videos get many thumbs down. Don't get me started on the number of accounts that got hacked and channels they have shut down. Even internet polls tend to be very skewed by them.

Atheists have good reason to question the Bible, but the hate that tends to come with it really bothers me. If you do not want to believe in God fine, but there is no need to get crosses banned at a memorial or to stop a coach from praying with his team before the big game.

IMHO most of them that have the word atheists in their username tend to be anti christian rather than someone that just doesn't believe in God.

I remember when someone here made an article on Christian music a couple years back (I think it was AtariMan), and the Legion was pushing for everyone to down-vote his article so it would be removed.

There was a Christian on YouTube who I used to watch called Veritas48 who made some really good videos picking apart atheist arguments against the existence of God, but his account got hacked by an atheist and was shut down. After he got it back up, he started getting death threats and decided to close it down for good for the safety of his family.

JSwiftX,

What does it matter what the "modern state of atheism" is? You believe whatever you believe... who cares what anyone else thinks? Its not like we're in street gangs and gotta uphold reps, you know?

I commend the posters on this thread for being cooheaded. In other sites I go this thread would've gotten ugly withing the first three posts.

Personally,I'm mainly areligious. I believe religions have brought nothing but trouble to our species. You can believe in a God if you like, but you don't have to join a damn club and surrender your existance to it. BUT,I do respect those who practice their religions in good faith. But way too many people had to die just so we could live in these times of Live and Let Live.

In my opinion people who have a religious and/or philosophic framework in there life seem to be happier more rounded human beings; and it dosen't really matter what they believe.

I am not talking about a simple belief in God, just believing in God dosn't make you religious. I believe in changing the battery in my smoke detector twice a year but that does not make me a fire marshal. I am talking about a belief system with a philosophic point-of-view and a code of conduct.

But just going around and saying to others you must believe in God, or not as the case may be passes for a religion in our century and it isn't going to make you any happier in this life or the next.

You can stop reading now I am just going to relate something that happened to me about a year ago and is only marginally related to the topic and if I don't write it down now I'll forget it and it will bug me when I remember it.

My boss took me out to dinner to introduce me to one of her sons teachers, I think she was trying to set us up but never mind.

Some how we got onto the topic of the changes that have occurred in Mexico over the last few years he said the biggest change was on the drive to Guadalajara coming from San Miguel is the fact that all the crosses on the mountain tops were now cell phone towers, and he said: "we've gotten rid of the Church but we haven't found anything to replace it with."

To the bible thumper I ask when you convert everyone what's left for you? To the militant atheist I ask when no one believes in anything what then?

I have a belief system and a philosophic point-of-view, and I am not going to give it up so don't bother asking me to do so. I will not ask you to give up yours and I will not be offended when you put your beliefs into practis but I don't care if my religious practises offend you I am still going to do so.

God bless you.

I'm not sure he himself cares about it. Seems he just picks a hot issue, puts a ridiculous spin on it and publishes it in his blog. I think he's trying to become a news anchor.

Well there are more important things to talk about in the chit chat forum. Like which pokemon character is your favorite and disney princess would you like to date...

My Dear Wormwood,

The real fun is working up hatred between those who say 'mass' and those who say 'holy communinon' when neither party could possibly state the difference between, say, Hooker's doctrines and Thomas aquinas', in any form wich would hold water for five minutes.

Your affectionate uncle,
Screwtape.

This is a big reason why I never call myself an atheist. In fact, I really don't care or revolve my beliefs around how we came into being or what our role is to some supernatural being (or lack thereof), so really I'm more of an apathest.

Here's a good example of someone I would consider to be a "religious" atheist:
