Wow, what a bitch. As Shazbot said, "banning" the word just makes it all that more appealing anyway. I'm glad we live in a society that counters unnecessary censorship so much.
What makes it worse is that "retard" was never used as a slur against retarded people, it was just how their condition was referred to and became an insult (mostly only among groups of friends) because of that. If the word for it was "sputable" then people would be saying that instead. And conversely, whatever they plan on changing it to, if it actually became official or whatever, will become an insult soon enough. At my old high school, they changed the term to "Emotionally Disturbed," or ED - which, in my opinion, sounds worse than retard, and the initials becoming a joke among the students and staff.
