How people do not show compassion anymore

I'm sorry for this but it's eating me inside and I just need to rant and get your info on this.

My grandfather has had 2 strokes in the past 4 days. He's currently in the hospital with his right side of his body numb and he's having trouble trying to talk. At this moment, he's doing ok or as my uncle said "getting a little better". I'm at work and my mother notified me that he was in the emergency room at 14:40. I told my supervisor that if his condition worsens, I may have to leave my post (security) and head to the hospital as a family emergency. She understood (from what I got) and that I would need to call her and let her know so that the Branch Manager can be notified and send someone to cover my shift.

Well...it's been on me since 14:40 about my grandfather. Given, he maybe in a stable condition but I want to be near him just in case, ya know. I gave my supervisor a call about an hour ago and said I want to be near my grandfather. She said that she understands the sitution at hand but she doesn't want to keep doing this for the next day if his condition doesn't change or worsens to the point of death.

What really bugs the shit out of me is that, as employment has become scarce and everything, supervisors and everything up higher than me do not show a bit of compassion towards a working indvidual. I'm sorry that my grandfather's in the hospital possibly at a point where something can happen. If it doesn't "fall" within your guidelines as you call them, then whatever. I feel that if I do take the rest of my shift off to be with my grandfather, that I'm going to be getting another fucking coaching report about the attendence and that my Branch Manager will be here to criticize me about my attendence and that my grandfather falling ill and being hospitalized is not considered a reason for leaving my post. BULLSHIT! And if it comes down to acutally getting fired over it, I'll fucking quit right then and there because there's no reason as to consider this an "unexcusable" reason of leaving my post. I don't need someone who says was former military to belittle me in a 9X9 office, telling me that I won't get the job I signed up for in the Navy and all this bullshit. I don't want to work under someone who is really that much of a dickhead.

Military I understand because you not always in the same state or country and there's nothing you can do about it.

I believe if anyone in your family; mom, dad, brother/sister, grandparents should be ligitimate reasons as to leave your post. It's considered to be of immediate family.

That just urks me to no end.

My supervisor just called and said the Branch manager is trying to get someone up here to cover my shift. So hopefully I will be going home. This is another reason as to why I hate my job and I am willing to quit it any second. The only reason I keep going to work, putting $20 into my tank every 2 days and drive the 40+ miles to the city is because of the money that I currently owe in my personal life and the fact that I need to support my husband and myself. I quite honestly just want to do small ended jobs, to have some money and plus my parents are willing to help me in any way they can. I'm leaving for the Navy in a month or so so it really doesn't matter to me if I have a job or not. Plus, I'm getting paid almost 20K more than what I make a yaer as a security officer.

Have you guys notices the lack of compassion from companies or is it just a labor thing now; get every person to work so much for little pay and not see any humanistic qualities to understand anything that happens in a said person's life?

Let me know what you think.

My old place of employment years back was the same way. They fired you after 10 absences. It didn't matter what the reason was. Yes even with a doctor note they would fire you. You could take a leave of absence during hardships, but that had to be approved ahead of time. I saw a lot of good employees get fired because they missed work to care for their sick child. They were the same way about tardiness.

You are right though about these companies taking advantage of the fact people need work. Getting hired is like an act of congress. They do 50 interviews for 2 positions. They just don't care and think that a good manager shouldn't.

Your supervisor sounds like a real asshole. When there's an emergency concerning immediate family you should always be able to leave and go see them.
