Well, this is just censorship. Way to try to change history.

WTF? I think a kid would know that the context was the mid-19th century, and know enough to know that the "N" word is a horrible word to say, kind of like how they're taught not to say regular cuss words. If they feel uptight about it, put it on a "request" list, so it wouldn't have to be accessed by every kid. People need to stop trying to hide the bad things about the past

Its revisionist history in the making. If they want to start censoring the n-word, start with rap.

What a load. Great literature should never be edited or banned due to modern prudishness. I've read enough books filled with colorful language and direct references to sex in high school to conclude there were no standards for what you read there, so tampering with a book because of a single word anybody with half a brain knows is offensive is incredibly hypocritical.

Yes, let's defeat the entire purpose of literature like this in order to appease the cowardly, sheepish, politically correct, beaten by their husbands abused soccer moms. Should we really be that surprised at this point? I mean all you gotta do is say "but it's for the kids!!!!" and you can get away with damn near anything.

This is definitely a cultural sacrilege. Taking something from or omitting from any intellectual work makes ZERO sense.

It's like deciding to introduce Coca Cola to an indigenous tribe in south america. But the tribe has a severe superstitious aversion to high fructose corn syrup and caramel. Even though the ingredients are harmless, they still hate it. So the business people decide to take out the high fructose corn syrup and caramel. But then it's no longer Coca Cola. See what I'm getting at? Take away ANYTHING from that book and it's no longer that book. It's pointless.

What a bunch of bullshit. They might as well omit the slavery aspect of it. Maybe they could write that Jim was a butler while they're at it, and feature Native American Joe while they're at it. Mark Twain would be pleased.

These people are ignorant. Twain wasn't a racist, he was a master of dialects. He wrote the book in the everyday speech of the day.

It amazes me how a word can be so damn powerful and upset so many people. NIGGER! It's just a damn word. Shut the fuck up.

I've gotta stop trying to use big words all the time. You put it way better than I ever could.

finally! the language in that book is so offensive, it ruined me! i spent many hours crying to my school psychologist about the deep impact this book and the others like it had on my psyche due to its colorful language. it's about time they did away with this trash and taught our children properly. it's a small step, but i'm simply /enthralled/ that they've finally worked up the decency to take it.

perhaps when i have children of my own, i will consider sending them to public school. don't quote me on it though.

Yeah, you can also clean up that sarcasm that just oozed out of my monitor, missy.

Wow 96% of the people polled think this is a bad idea and we know how liberal people normaly are on the web. Editing this book is editing history. It's all about the context and the context is telling a story that slavery was wrong.

Political correctness is the belief that it is somehow possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

So I guess "Songs of the South" was just Disney being racist?

Because I've never heard black people talk that way.

    Being from Virginia and all........

I just read about this today. What's really scary is it won't stop here...they will keep finding things that they deem to be "offensive" and the censorship will continue, until they start rewriting history books for schools (which I assume they already do to an extent).

I remember a few years ago I was at a local college library, and they had a sign up in the front explaining that "The Adventures of Huck Finn" was banned and not to be carried by the library.

The second those kids get out of school more often than not they will hear all kind of slurs. So why a literature classic have to be raped like that.

Mark Twain will grabbed them by the ankles sooner or later you'll see.

1984 is pretty nasty too. The 2nd part is all sex. I'm surprised that didn't get banned in schools... yet.
