Full Body Scanners at Airports

So there's been all kinds of talk lately about the new full body scanners being installed at airports, and I was curious as to what the opinions are on them here.

On one side of the aisle, you got the people who say, "You can never be too careful! We have to do everything in our power to prevent another terrorist attack and keep this country safe!"

On the other side, you have people saying that the scanners can cause cancer, that the x-ray images are too "revealing"...and that if you refuse to be scanned, you have to have a full body pat down which is completely humiliating as the person doing the pat down "gropes" your personal areas.

I hardly ever fly, so this doesn't really effect me that much. However, I do believe that they are taking things too far with this.

I don't understand what the problem is. If you have nothing to hide, why be afraid of the scanners?

Its a violation of the 4th amendment and wholly unneeded. There have been zero attacks by terrorists on planes since 9/11. There have been attempts. But attempts don't count since they weren't successful. Not to mention, you have the TSA pat-down, where you're basically sexually assaulted by thugs. People have even been subjected to the pat-down in very rare cases, even after they do the full body scan. People's privacy is being violated in the named of 'national security', and its not right.

That "pat-down" is completely retarded, and at my airport they randomly do it to every tenth person (which makes no sense at all to me). I figured this would replace the pat-down and just be a simple procedure of stepping into a machine or something for a second to check for weapons.

Also, yes, there have been zero attacks since 9/11... so obviously the enhanced airport security is helping that. I really don't think there's any problem with it aside from the stupid random body searches.

Keep in mind, that the people who have made the attempts, have been international flights to the US. And they were stopped by the passengers. Not technology or an over aggressive TSA sexual predators. The enhanced airport security hasn't done shit.

Yes and the bombs were not big enough to take the planes down had they have gone off. The whole thing with 9/11 was the hijacking of planes to crash into buildings, not just taking planes down. The security measures after 9/11 have been successful at preventing this without body scans or pat-downs. The terrorist could kill more people by strapping a much larger bomb to themselves and setting it off into a crowded room. Or doing like McVeigh did in Oklahoma City. The terriorist know that if they try to take over a plane the passengers will will stop them.

I don't have a problem really. But there should be a modification of some sort to the scnner to make it less revealing.

I haven't seen the scanner working so correct me if I'm wrong, but apparently a person's private parts are shown and that should be corrected with some kind of blurring or whatever.

To those who claim LOL RADIATION: Put your fucking tin foil hat on. It's not that much different from a X-ray or a CT/MRI scan. not to mention the supposed radiation that comes from cell phones, TV signals, radio signals, whatever that occurs on a daily basis. Grow the F up. Seriously.

That being said, yes this is a bit extreme. not to mention it's always old people, kids, and/or frequent fliers getting scrutinized. But wait! if we scanned middle eastern, muslim, etc people that would be profiling! Oh America how great you are...

OK then. Perhaps they should have two types of flights. One with no security checks, and one with. Which would you go on?

    No Ken you're wrong

You guys are mistaken if you think we're advocating no security checks. We just don't see the need for full body scans or pat-downs for everyone. We did fine with metal detector and xraying of luggage. 911 happened if you remember because the terrorist were not properly screened and because airport security dropped the ball. Additional screening and restrictions since 9/11 has been successful without full body scans and pat-downs till now. Of course some people will need extra screening if there are questions, but this bullshit of doing it with everyone just so no one gets offended is well bullshit. Instead lots of people are getting offended. I'm right!

Agreed. X-ray machines were working fine. Along with adding restrictions to what could be brought on the plane in the carry on. (I still don't see the need to take people's nail clippers...)

I'm sorry, I stand firm on this debate. I watched way too much Macgyver as a kid. I know what can happen with some electrical tape and nail clippers.
