Wow this is like the IMDB for 80's music.

Amazing how I was just thinking the same thing myself about this thread!

Like many have already mentioned before, the 80's was a musical decade the likes of which can only be equalled by the 60's. And every music genre was represented - even operatic and theatrical style musicals!

I got some razzing two years ago when I first posted this, but here is an example of just how amazing the 80's music scene really was:

When "CHESS: The Musical" was under developement in the early 80's, a concept album of songs was produced by Tim Rice and former composers from the group ABBA. One song from the album made an impact with radio listeners and became a world-wide hit when it was released as a single.

Now I usually don't link to "lyric" videos, but this youtube upload is awesome in sound quality, and truthfully, the writing is just as unique as the musical score. Add to that, the "rap" narration by Murray Head, and his put-down of typical tourist thinking when it comes to cities in Southeast Asia. The dude is funny, I know I'm not the only Retro Junker that likes this song. :D

Imho, this is one of the standout songs of the mid-eighties!

Murray Head - "One Night in Bangkok" - 1984:

The Beach Boys - Chasin' the Sky from the soundtrack to Up the Creek. It's a damn shame this is so difficult to find officially as it's one of their best later period songs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DI-Lway3bdM

Of course Wind Adept and jrs1991 would post my favorites.
    Awesome songs! :D

But what about Fleetwood Mac fans?

Well, one of my favorite F/M songs is from the 80's. And I just love how this song meanders through to the ending where Christine McVie sets up a "call and responce" pattern with the chorus with lots of pause time between lyrics, so the guitar really comes through - I just love this song,

Omg, what a fun video! Great song and just look at the joy on the faces of all those people. Kinda hard to sit still watching that, lol.

    Now try this.

The daughter of Johnny Cash released an album in the early 80's and it reached the top of the country music charts at the time. One song from that album became a #1 hit for her.

I remember the song because it has one of the best lyric lines I'd ever heard in a country song: "Don't bother calling to say you're leaving alone, 'Cause there's a fool on every corner when you're trying to get home". Amen!

Although it was a hit at the time, lately this song doesn't seem to get much airplay today. Frankly, I'm still not sure what the song is about. Wikipedia says it's about a guy, in a bar, upset over his failed marriage.

I'm not convinced, when I listen to it, I hear waaay more than that in the lyrics!
