The greatest songs of the Eighties

    Here's one of the most talked about songs of the 80's.

    Rumor has it that Billy Idol was a fan of the 1960 movie "Eyes Without a Face", and his hit song by the same name was inspired by the film.

    True or not, the music and the video were a mainstay on MTV at the time, and I sure can't image the 80's without this song.

    Billy Idol - "Eyes Without a Face" - 1984:

    Here are scenes from the 1960 movie set to Billy Idol's 1984 hit song, but a word of caution - I found some scenes disturbing and this video my not be suitable for all RJ members:

    Here are the four hits from Yes' 1983 album 90125. This was a blend of Yes trademarks, mainstream rock and state of the art pop production that was very successful for the group.

    Most of the material on the album was originally meant for a Yes spinoff group called Cinema. Cinema was formed by Yes members Chris Squire and Alan White after Steve Howe left Yes in 1981 to join Asia. Cinema also featured Tony Kaye who had played keyboards on the first few Yes albums and Trevor Rabin. When Yes lead singer Jon Anderson (who had abandoned the group in early 1980 to form the duo Jon & Vangelis) was played tapes of Cinema's songs and he liked what he had heard he got on board to add vocals and rewrite some of the lyrics and it seemed natural to reformat the project into a new Yes lineup.

    The group's label Atco/ Atlantic were very receptive because they now wouldn't have to promote a new band and could cash in on the Yes name.

    90125 was produced by Trevor Horn, formerly of the Buggles (of Video Killed the Radio Star fame) and who had replaced Jon Anderson on lead vocals for one Yes album, 1980's Drama. Trevor Horn sang backup on one of 90125's singles, Leave It.

    Finally here's a few facts about the Owner of a Lonely Heart video. Keyboardist Tony Kaye briefly left the band and in the music video Eddie Jobson is miming his parts. Here's a clip of Yes on a French tv show miming to an edited version of Owner shot after Tony had returned;

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J7jC0aZJHHY

    Owner's music video was directed and designed by Storm Thorgerson who is best known for the album covers, music videos and other assorted visuals he's done for Pink Floyd over the years.

    Sometimes music video shows and channels opted not show the false start that tricks people into thinking it's just a simple band miming to the song video.

    Owner of a Lonely Heart was reviewed on Beavis and Butt-head. They didn't like the song, but eventually they got into the video;

    The Buggles - Video Killed the Radio Star.

    The cheesiest as they come... definately an 80's landmark. The fact that it was the very first video music on MTV (1981) needs some recognition.

    Who Can it Be Now off Business as Usual is my favorite Men at Work song. Business as Usual was a big seller during '81 - '82.

    Starship - Find Your Way Back

    It's not every day I see somebody who remembers something from these guys other than We Built This City and Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now. That was from 1981 back when Paul Kantner was still in the band and they were still called Jefferson Starship. When Paul Kantner and David Freiberg left the band in '84 that's when they became just Starship. The followup single to Find Your Way Back, Stranger is good too. Grace Slick had been away from the group for a few years doing solo albums and attending rehab and AA but this brought her back. Grace happend to live up the street from where the group were recording at the time and they invited her to come sing back up vocals for a few days and they cut Stranger and Stairway to Cleveland. She wound up joining the band for the '81 tour and becoming a full time member again.

    Over time Grace's 1980 solo album Dreams has been recognized as a classic in some circles and is long overdue for a North American reissue. It has been reissued on cd in Japan.
