If you were the president

I saw this interesting topic a while back so I am reviving it.

What would you do if you were president?

So I heard, lots of people aspire to become president.

I know if I were, I'd privatize education and declare homosexuality a non-political issue.

So basically, you'd take away everyone's rights to education, except those who can afford it?

I would collective all schools, for starters. Homosexuality of course is a non-political issue, but homosexual rights are.

Who would be the majority in the House and Senate? Most changes would have to go through them first and you would either sign it into law or veto it. You could do an executive order, but the courts could still block you. The presedent doesn't have as much power as you think.

Me I would cut 60% of the governments spending which would piss A LOT of people off.

That's what I meant. Sorry. Besides, what the hell is wrong with being more efficient? Also, I tend to swing on my views sometimes, so get used to that.

Taking away rights is not efficient.

Taking away rights is not efficient.

What are you trying to suggest?
I was basically trying to state that I will declare homosexual rights politics as void, as the government shall have no say in it. People can be who they want. Do you understand this now?

Also, I was talking about the school system when I asked what was wrong with being more efficient.

And what you think about education being collective, isn't the system already like that? Do you just want to expand the public system? If not, please tell me what you mean by being "collective."

I'm suggesting that private education, charter schools, etc.are abolished, and for a general overhaul of the educational system, with more funding. Collective means that society owns and runs education.

I understand your position on homosexual rights, and I oppose it. If homosexual rights is simply declared "void", it could go either way, there could be greater discrimination against LBGT individuals or it could cut down, but there's the possibility for both to happen.

Public school funding has doubled over the last 30 years and test scores have been flat past elementary school. More money isn't the answer as some other schools have proven. The problem is public schools are a monopoly. Unless you have money to send a child to a private school they must go to the school they are zoned to. Homeschooling is a possibility, but many parents don't have the knowledge and their kids don't have the discipline for it. Charter schools have helped a lot of kids in disadvantaged neighborhoods. Look up KIPP charters schools. They have kids from some of the poorest neighborhoods, but perform better than kids in many rich public schools.

The answer is competition. You give parents a choice to decide where their kids get their education. You do this by privatizing education. You still have a public school system, but you let the private sector start their own schools with state funding and using the area school buses. If they don't perform they lose funding. The public schools will also compete and if they don't perform they too will get shut down. That is how the people can run education. Having public schools ran by the people with no private education would just complicate things as no one will agree on anything. Look at all the fuss now about dress codes, religion and what is in the science and history books. Let each parent decide what school their child goes to, have minimum standards and let the individual schools decide what they want to teach beyond that.

I don't know about you, but I think that is very harsh. I have actually spent almost all of my whole elementary and middle school life in private school. My tech school I go during midday also happens to be privatized as far as I know. Even my tech instructor believes the education system will work more efficiently if it were privatized.

Maybe it's just impossible but a man can dream, right?

If you saw that link I posted earlier in this thread, efficiency is nonsense.

If I'm not mistaken, I think that's how it's done here in Japan. I think parents can choose where their children go to school, as I see some children in one area riding the train or their bikes to another area even though there's a school nearby. I know children choose the high schools as they have to test into them (both public and private).

Education isn't a commodity, and if it is, it shouldn't be.

Of course giving schools more money isn't the solution. However it is part of it.

Giving money to a failed system is useless. The system needs to be changed.

Charter schools have done good, but the charter school is not the best system in my view.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_education

I believe a democratic education is the answer to poor education. I also see no problem with homeschooling, but I think the parents should have a teaching license.

There could still be room for religious schools and schools with dress codes within a collective education system, and would essentially be your idea without the private sector.

Also, if the private sector is borrowing from government funding, that seems a bit less than capitalist.
