What does freedom of speech mean? That you can say anything you want to, any time you want? What if you lied after swearing an oath in court to tell the truth? Would that just be excercising free speech? Free speech means you can say anything to anyone, right? |

It could get people hurt. But no person who uses their brain can see how calling someone names is anywhere close to the same thing. People are far too sensitive lately. So, someone calls someone else names. Big deal. Do people forget that there are people that kill other people ? And you people are so up in arms about someone getting their feelings hurt ? Please. Get over it and get on with life. Freedom of Speech does NOT grant everyone the right to violate other peoples rights; individuals possess a right not to be subjected to falsehoods that impugn their character. What the fuck can't you understand about that? |

Get over it and get on with life. No matter how you interrupt the constitution or the law no one has unlimited freedom of speech. I agree many people today are too sensitive, but there has to be a line drawn on what speech is harmful. No matter what the law says you will always have public opinion and saying the wrong thing can get you in a heap of trouble. You can say all day that saying the N word is your right of freedom of speech, but it will not stop you from getting your ass kicked or worst. When you say that people have the right to say what they want to a cop you are basically giving the general public more power that a officer of the law. If you call a man's wife a bitch in front of her and her husband you will probably get your ass kicked, but if you call an officer one he or she can't do anything. You can argue that the person that kicked your ass can be sued or charged with assault, but you still got your ass kicked. What about your boss at work or your teachers at school? Can you start yelling and ranting during work hours? Can you imagine that pandemonium if students and employees could say whatever they wanted because it is their freedom of speech? What about interrupting a speech? Yet cops are supposed to stand there and let people insult them while they are doing police business? Sorry dude, but you got it all wrong. |

| In the USA, we have freedom of speech of course, but there is a hierarchy established by the Supreme Court over many court cases concerning what is the most protected and what is the least protected. Fighting words, or hate speech, is the least protected. The speech has to be harmful and of little or no social value to be considered hate speech. It's very rare in the USA though, that hate speech is actually silence (even Fred Phelps and Westboro Baptist Church are still at it). However, if someone is repeatedly calling you names and making you feel threatened, you can charge them with harrassment and/or get a restraining order. thus the cops were within their rights to arrest him. |

Ok this is the second thread that has turned into personal attacks and spam aginst each other in here recently. Please keep your attacks aginst each other outside this forum and stay on topic!!!!! "No religion since there is a forum for that, no sexuality since that is never pretty (that means no Gay marriage threads). Also no bashing, spamming or flaming other RJ users as well as trolling. Its OK to discuss or debate issues with other users, but keep it clean or the thread will get locked. Immigration issues are OK as long as they are not racist in nature. Republicans, Democrats, Independents, Libertarians or any others can all post and debate here. Oh and no "so and so sucks threads" please. " |

| eddstarr88 wrote: I have to admit that me and my friends need to grow up and get off the "cop hate" express. Law enforcement is important to any organized society and police officers deserve respect from the public they serve. I kind of wonder how important police really are to society though. Don't get me wrong they do serve a important function. How important I wonder though? Consider that police don't really stop crime. They get called after most crimes get committed. So they stop future crimes from happening. Also they restore order an give the illusion of punishment of crimes. A number of crimes committed never get reported to police. Also a number of crimes never get solved. Personally I say give me a gun and let me protect myself. I'd also say we should respect cops who do their jobs with integrity. However there does need to be some distinction between good and bad cops. Bad cops don't deserve any respect at all. Guys who commit more crimes than any criminal don't get respect. We shouldn't hate on cops just because they are cops. However some of them do go off on a power trip. I've had a few attempt to arrest me for really no reason at all. Like in any thing there is good and bad. The police are really no different in that aspect. As far as the topic goes it's crazy. This guy was stupid as hell for talking shit to them. I've had some words with police, but never went out of my way to do so. I usually try and avoid saying any thing to them. It's just a misdemeanor any way for Disorderly conduct. Dude is wrong to think he doesn't have to give a police officer his I.D. As long as they are in uniform or show you police I.d you have to show them your I.D. What I'm more interested in is if these dudes had a warrant to search this chicks car? She really didn't look like a hard core criminal to me. I wonder if she gave then permission and why they stopped her? She doesn't look like a hard core criminal that needs 3 police vehicles. I know police can do a quick search of the front of your vehicle. They can do this under the thinking that you may have a weapon. However they removed her from the vehicle first which would negate any immediate threat to their lives. |

It's sort of ridiculous how the cops reacted. A guy calls them "Nazis" and they arrest him? Couldn't they be stoping real criminals, instead of arresting an infantile lil' Anarkiddie and then spark a news story that makes conservatives and fibble-minded Yahoo users rage? Freedom of speech goes as far as the government wants it to. |

| Yes, I'm sure they were the only cops available for any other crime in the area about to be reported within the next ten minutes. |
