From 1970 I have a real period piece to lay on ya.
Chart topping hit songs were a mainstay of television variety shows back in the day and it was expected that many of the hottest musical groups would appear on TV and "lip-sync" to their recorded songs.
Shows like American Bandstand made lip-syncing acceptable to television audiences, so it was rare to see any musical group that was willing to actually sing on-camera for a weekly TV show.
The Andy Williams Show on NBC was different because Andy himself was involved in all areas of the shows production and he preferred singers that could perform live and make it sound like the recorded hit. As you guys know thats a tough standard for most artists to meet.
Well here is a rare example of musical accomplishment, the popular singing group The 5th Dimension appeared on Andy's show to sing live to the acoustical track of their 1970 hit song:

This is the perfect place to add a beautiful little song from the 1973 satellite broadcast starring Elvis called "Aloha From Hawaii". Many people over the years have shared stories of meeting Elvis and were taken by his kindness and genuine warmth towards the Hawaiian people. Elvis wanted to acknowledge their affection by singing this wonderful composition by Kui Lee, one of Hawaii's most popular songwriters.
This is a very sweet moment in the concert and it highlights the gentleness that Elvis can bring out in a song. Many in the audience still tear up when they think back to this moment all these years later.

Glad to see you guys stirring the pot around here, nice selection of music.
Now sit up straight and pay close attention here cuz ol' Eddie's has one of the most unusual covers of a very familiar tune. Better turn up the volume or you'll miss the unexpectedly complex orchestration throughout this song.
I know you guys have heard this song a million times, but I bet it was nothing quite like this!

Here's a song that was all over the radio in 1972. For Gilbert O'Sullivan this song was a mega-hit, topping the music charts for weeks in the USA. Gilbert was honored at the 15th Annual Grammy Awards in 1973 to sing his song live at the event.
This song became a favorite of mine when I saw how deeply moved my father was when we watched Gilbert sing on television. One of those memories that will stay with me always.

CHRISTMAS 1972 Everyone!
When this tune hit in December 1972 there was no doubt in my mind that it was going right to the top of every music chart in the USA. Can you imagine living at a time when Christmas carols happily shared airtime with the hottest tune on radio?
By January 1973 this song had gone viral, back when no one knew what that phrase was, LOL! Even my teachers in high school couldn't keep still when this song was playing. You could hear this from every open window and every passing car back in the day.
I get better looking just thinking about this.

Very nice post, you can never go wrong with Lynyrd Skynyrd my friend. "Gimme Back My Bullets" makes me wish I still owned my Eldorado, lol!
Now I want you GN, New Age Retro Hippie and the rest of the RJ gang to follow me back to the Spring of 1973 for The Spinners follow-up hit song that followed my entire high school class right into summer break.
What a great time to young, in love and not in summer school!
