BEST SONGS OF THE SEVENTIES

This list is personal and I've intentionally avoided the more cliche and obvious songs of the era such as Stairway to Heaven, Freebird, etc. Several of them may be called "one hit wonders" which seems a bit insulting. A good song is a good song regardless. They are in no particular order.

In the City--The Eagles
Surrender--Cheap Trick
Rock Lobster--The B52s
Lean on Me--Bill Withers
Golden Years--David Bowie
Moonshadow--Cat Stevens
Anticipation--Carly Simon
Changes--David Bowie
Walk on the Wild Side--Lou Reed
Rocket Man--Elton John
Kid Charlemagne--Steely Dan
Won't Get Fooled Again--The Who
I Can See Clearly Now--Johnny Nash
Carry On Wayward Son--Kansas
My Sharona--The Knack
Perfect Day--Lou Reed
Over the Hills and Far Away--Led Zeppelin
Tuesday's Gone--Lynyrd Skynyrd
Stuck in the Middle With You--Stealer's Wheel
Take the Money and Run--Steve Miller
Life During Wartime--Talking Heads
Year of the Cat---Al Stewart
Show and Tell--Al Wilson
We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions--Queen
How Deep Is Your Love--The Bee Gees
O-O-Oh Child--The Five Stairsteps
Time In a Bottle--Jim Croce
Live and Let Die--Paul McCartney
Alison--Elvis Costello
50 Ways to Lose Your Lover--Paul Simon

That's plenty for now. I know I've left some out.

Here's an old favorite of mine from the pre-disco year of 1973,
It's the group First Choice singing "Smarty Pants":

What about Don't Fear the Reaper? that's a great song.
"Nobody wants to see vampire killers or vampires either! apparently all they want are demented madmen running around in ski-masks hacking up young virgins"-Peter Vincent from Fright Night.

White Rabbit was from 1967 and Jefferson Airplane disbanded in 1972. They quickly reformed as Jefferson Starship but Jefferson Airplane members Jack Cassidy (Bass) and Jorma Kaukonen had left by that point and formed Hot Tuna.

Jefferson Starship did have a few big hits in the 70's, Ride the Tiger, Miracles, Fast Buck Freddie, With Your Love, Count On Me and Jane. Most of these are collected together on the greatest hits album Jefferson Starship Gold.

I'm going to guess that not many on RJ are fans of that sensational group from Germany, Silver Convention or their hit song "Fly Robin Fly". One thing for sure, when this song hit in 1975 it stayed in Billboard's #1 spot for weeks because nothing else sounded quite like it at the time. It sure got my attention:

That is a wicked tune. I first remember liking it after hearing it playing in the background in the movie Boogie Nights. Great song to have cranked in the car with people staring at you at a stoplight.

Dude, you are my hero! :D

Thank you for finding one of my favorite ELO songs. Showdown stands out as unique, even among ELO's brand of music. Love the way the strong strings stand out and set the mood right from the opening.

I was so sure that this song would spawn a movie, or was inspired by one. I can think of several scenes from various westerns that fit Showdown.

wtf, I just plain love this song!
