i'm sure many of us have been through this situation. for me, i really like this girl and i want to hang out with her and show her a good time. i get the feeling she likes me as well. the problem is she just got screwed over by someone she put a lot of feelings into. she's really broken up over it and won't hang out with me right because of it. i tell her that i'm willing to help but she is much too broken up to really listen. that's what's going on in my life right now. any advice or similar situation for anyone else?

This is tricky, girls are vulnerable in this stage and a lot of guys try to take advantage of the situation

I'd give her a week or two. In the meantime, be supportive but try not to fall into the "just friends" zone

Stay independent, active, and invite her to do something fun

I agree with Echidna64 just have fun with her but keep your distance it will give you time to know her better. But most importantly do NOT talk/ask about her ex because right now is YOUR time.

Pretend he never happened by avoiding feeling too sorry for her or 'how you'll be better/never hurt you' kind of talk. That will immediately trigger her defence mechanism.

You'll see, eventually she'll warm up to you.
